This article is a preview for Extraordinary Attorney Woo season 1, episodes 9 & 10, and may contain spoilers for previous episodes.
Netflix’s latest k-drama offering is Extraordinary Attorney Woo, a charming dramedy about a young woman with an autism spectrum disorder joining a big law firm and facing a fair helping of irrational prejudice alongside her legal cases.
The latest two episodes delivered built to easily the most emotional and impactful character moment in the season thus far for Young-woo. The show continues to display admirable economy in its storytelling and is well on-track to be one of the best k-dramas of the year. Here’s where we’re at:
Episode 7: “Everyone loves an underdog story. At its core, I suppose that’s what Extraordinary Attorney Woo is, and its cases have reflected that. “A Tale About Sodeok-dong I”, which I believe is the season’s first two-parter, is as neat an encapsulation of the theme as you could hope for. There are plans for a highway to pass through a small town, separating Sodeok-Dong into two neighborhoods, entirely against the will of the people that live there.”
Episode 8: “Within all this, there are touching themes of abandonment and a father trying to protect his vulnerable daughter by being dishonest. There are gags — the umbrellas! — and the whole thing with Min-woo still percolating. But Extraordinary Attorney Woo really steadfastly refuses to characterize anyone as a hero or a villain. Everyone seems to have their reasons for what they’re doing, or what they’ve done, and while there is certainly emotion involved, it isn’t overplayed for effect. The cast is playing their roles perfectly, and the writing deserves more credit even amongst all the deserved praise this show is getting. It’s still relatively early days, but it’s easy to imagine this being one of the very best k-dramas of the year.”
