More secrets are unraveled as Sophie indulges in experimental treatment and Baden infiltrates James’ business via his cowardly assistant. Here’s what happened in episode four of Surface:
- Baden informs Sophie of his plans to find further evidence on James. Sophie worries James will avoid any serious jail time though.
- Hannah warns Sophie not to get involved in any experimental therapy in her current fragile state. Sophie needs Hannah to sign off on the treatment, but she refuses. Hannah explains that the only way to recover is with these weekly sessions.
- Harrison gives James an ultimatum. He has 48 hours to retrieve most of the lost money or he’ll have to tell the partners. Harrison respects James, but he doesn’t want to go to prison.
- Sophie sells her jewelry for cash.
- Baden sells drugs to James’ assistant Todd to frame him.
- James asks Caroline to help him out of his money woes. She offers him four million, but he needs nine million in total.
- Sophie signs up with the experimental treatment facility where she lies in a shallow pool of water. Fragments of memories return, including her arguing with James and kissing a woman.
- Sophie uses her anniversary as a way to gain more information from James. They book into the hotel where they got married and reconnect. Todd phones James during these celebrations. The investigators have turned up at his office and want access to his files. James tells Todd to give them nothing, to keep them out. Later, Sophie records James making his confession in bed.
- Sophie pays an escort to kiss her, hoping to gauge an understanding of her own sexuality.
- Baden breaks into Todd’s apartment and frames the assistant. Baden wants some hard evidence on James or he’ll get Todd arrested for drug dealing.
- Hannah informs Sophie that she has told James about her erratic behavior and has phoned the wellness facility to complain. Sophie feels betrayed and storms out, telling Hannah that her husband cannot be trusted.

- Todd will hand Baden all the files he has on James and the investigators will require the same data too.
- James will struggle to raise the remaining money he needs to break even. Caroline may even back out of their deal when she sees how dodgy the situation has become.
- Sophie will search for a new method of retrieving her memories. She won’t return to Hannah ever again. Hannah will involve the authorities, worried that Sophie has gone rogue.
- Baden will gather his evidence and take it to his boss once more. Baden may lose his job for this reckless behavior, but feels a strong desire to at least try.
