A League of Their Own is a sports comedy-drama series based on the Penny Marshall classic of the same name. That 1992 film went on to 132 million dollars at the box office, and in 2012, it was preserved in the United States National Film Registry. One of the principal characters in the main cast is Greta Gill, played by D’Arcy Carden of The Good Place fame. The talented former The Late Night with Conan O’Brien and current Barry player plays Greta Gill, a statuesque baseball player from New York. She also is living a secret life as a lesbian in 1940s America. And something tells me that living in her new home, the deep south of Georgia, may not look kindly on such matters.

So, that begs the question:

Who is Greta Gill in A League of Their Own season 1?

Greta Gill is a respected All-American Girl’s Professional Baseball League member. Greta is the Rockford Peaches’ first baseman and a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

What does Greta Gill do?

Greta Gill buys a train ticket with her best friend Jo and heads to Chicago to try out for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. She makes the squad. So does Jo, and a woman they met along the way, Carson Shaw (played by series creator Abbi Jacobsen). Greta moves on Carson and takes her to the storage room at the back of the bar. They kiss. However, Greta leaves her behind. Why? She is unclear at first, but later, as their relationship grows more passionate and serious, she explains. It’s for her own safety.

Greta tells Carson she has a set of rules. They came to be because Greta and her first girlfriend were safe, but they became less secure as they fell in love. They were caught, and her first girlfriend was “put away” by her parents, but Greta’s family did no such thing. When she leaves that night with a man in her arms, she does this again for safety. When she is about to start something new, in this case, Carson, it’s vital to be spotted with a man on the same night. Later in the series, when Charlie shows up, Greta becomes jealous, just like Carson was of her male “beards.”

When at an illegal watering hole that allows same-sex relationships, they are dancing, and Carson asks to go back to California with Greta. That’s when the police raid the bar. They manage to escape but lose track of Jo. Greta is now furious with Carson for convincing her to go out that night, not respecting the rules. Jo is caught by the police and is forced to be traded off the team. Usually, both run out of town when this happens, but Jo is sick of being Greta’s sidekick. She takes the chance to play with the Blue Sox.

Greta and Carson patch things up and make it to the GBPL championship but lose. Greta’s best friend hits the winning homerun but injures her knee and cannot make it across the bases. Carson and Greta help friends cross the bases together. The show ends with Greta landing a job in New York City for the summer and inviting Carson to come with her. She declines, but her lover thanks her for changing her life forever.
