This article discusses whether there will be an Orphan: First Kill 2, a sequel to the Paramount+ film Orphan: First Kill, and will contain spoilers. You can check out our spoiler-free review by clicking these words.
In the prequel to the 2009 cult hit, we find our Esther — whose real name is Leena Klamme before taking over that persona — in a psychiatric hospital in Estonia. From there, she escapes because of the most inept guards in film history and sneaks away in the new art therapist’s car. From there, the 31-year-old sociopath with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome is shipped to America, claiming to be Esther Albright, a missing girl who went missing a couple of years prior.
They write a big twist into the new film, directed by William Brent Bell (The Devil Inside) and writer David Coggeshall (The Haunting in Connecticut 2). While that plot point is not as jaw-dropping as the original, it is still unexpected. However, Orphan: First Kill improves nothing on the original and is well aware of its limitations. If you are searching for possible sequels (or more prequels?) to continue the Orphan franchise, here is everything we know!
Orphan: First Kill potential sequel release date
Orphan: First Kill will be released this Friday, August 12th, 2022, on Paramount+. The film will also be given a limited theatrical release across the country starting Thursday night. The new movie has gotten favorable positive reviews while currently holding a 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, pointing out the campy horror may represent an improvement on the original. However, Ready Steady Cut film critic M.N. Miller, an Orphan super fan, said, “Despite a mildly inspired twist the filmmakers have no idea what to do with, Orphan: First Kill is a frustratingly standard horror picture.”
Paramount+ has yet to officially or unofficially announce a third Orphan film. Considering the positive reviews the film has garnered so far and how cheap this genre is to make, the sequel gets permission depending on how it plays over the weekend. However, there is a significant buzz about this prequel, and this has the potential to be the young streaming network’s most popular original film ever. If so, look for another installment between the prequel and the original timeline and some time at the end of 2023 or early 2024.
Orphan: First Kill sequel cast – who can be in it?
Esther can, but do not look for the Albrights to come back for a future installment. As for the original cast, Esther was killed at the first film’s end. Therefore, it would have to take place between 2006 and 2009. I can see Isabelle Fuhrman reprising her role in that period, possibly Esther’s current therapist, but not much else.
However, I have an idea of the prequel left on the cutting room floor.
Orphan: First Kill Sequel plot – what can Orphan: First Kill 2 be about?
This film starts by giving the viewer a brief explanation of how Esther ended up at the facility. Pictures were shown, and the graphic nature suggests she killed her family. They could recast Esther with a younger actor since, let’s face it, the passing of time is not on most people’s side.
The third film will likely have Esther with a new family before meeting her “forever” family, Kate and John. I love the idea of Esther on the road, making new friends, and leaving a bloody trail with the authorities trying to figure out who is leaving bodies along Route 66. Otherwise, I am calling for Kirsten Dunst and Liev Schreiber to be her new adopted parents.
