Though having to compete with a fair few K-Drama hits, Alchemy of Souls has still managed to obtain a sizeable fanbase, in part thanks to the consistent writing pairing, the Hong sisters, being at the helm. With slick world-building, investible characters, and an engagingly layered battle between good and evil, it’s a show worthy of the praise it has received, even if it can sometimes feel like a marathon to get through.

Based around the story of Jang Uk, a mage who lives life overcoming obstacles put before him so he can escape the shadow of his disappeared father and carve his own path, as well as Naksu, a former assassin who hides in the body of the slender-framed Mu-deok, Alchemy of Souls is as much of a story about growth, love and determination as it is overcoming evil. With a highly regarded cast that includes the likes of Lee Jae-wook, Jung So-min, Yoo In-soo and Jo Jae-yun, it’s no wonder that Netflix stats show it was viewed for 17,840,000 hours between August 8-14.

With that in mind, let’s talk about the renewal status of Alchemy of Souls.

Will there be a season 2 of the Netflix K-Drama series Alchemy of Souls – renewed or cancelled status

Status: Renewed!

Despite its first season having 20 episodes (four more than the usual 16 of a K-Drama), Alchemy of Souls will be returning for a second season. This isn’t overly surprising, considering that a full conclusion appears unlikely to be reached in the next week, and the detailed story still has plenty of mileage in it. Add to that the fact that the show has seen a steady stream of popularity on Netflix – it often appears on the global top 10 rankings – and it makes sense as to why another installment would be wise.

However, it’s worth noting that this will not be another 20-episode affair. Instead, the content will be halved, allowing for the story to naturally wrap up rather than drag on. For those who do feel that this show is a bit of a mammoth task, this news will be welcome.

Unfortunately, there is no official release date for Alchemy of Souls season two, but with speculation that it is already in production, we wouldn’t bet against an early-mid 2023 release.
