5 Reasons to Watch The Patient on Hulu
Reason 1. Steve Carell
Steve Carrell is, of course, renowned for so many of his comedic roles, but over the last decade or so he has pulled some excellent, far more dramatic performances out of the bag. There is no reason why his turn in The Patient couldn’t be another one of these, and for what it’s worth, I think the role of a therapist could suit him very well.
Reason 2. Domhnall Gleeson
Just like his dad Brendan, Domhnall Gleeson is a very versatile actor. He is down to play the man who I believe the title of this show refers to, so this could be a real opportunity for him to stretch his legs with this performance.
Reason 3. Is there a psychological horror vibe?
Needling piano notes and a general downward spiral form the score that provides the backdrop to The Patient’s trailer. Combined with the unsettling nature of the exchanges featured here, everything points towards the fact that this isn’t likely to be a simple drama centring on therapy sessions. There is going to be a lot more afoot.
Reason 4. Intimate, close quarters dynamic
This goes hand-in-hand with the point made above in that the interactions between Steve Carrell and Domhnall Gleeson’s characters are going to be under such a bright spotlight that it could potentially create a very uncomfortable and close atmosphere. If the characters and the actors playing them have been matched well, everything else should almost become background noise and make it feel like you’re in the room with them.
Reason 5. From the same creative duo as The Americans and Fosse/Verdon
The Patient comes from good stock. The show’s writers also penned The Americans and Fosse/Verdon – both were critically acclaimed, with the former being one of the most popular and impressive TV shows of recent years. Whilst some might have their reservations in that they could be due a stumble, it’s also worth noting that both of these other titles feature a lead duo, just like The Patient does. Maybe they just know how to write people in a way that we can’t tear ourselves away?
