Rick and Morty
I would find it hard to believe if you haven’t at least heard of Rick and Morty, which took the world of adult animation by storm when it first premiered on Adult Swim in 2013. Developed by Community creator Dan Harmon and the show’s primary voice-actor Justin Roiland, Rick and Morty is known for dark humor and compelling science-fiction concepts. If you’re craving the mix of science fiction and adult humor that Star Trek: Lower Decks provides, then look no further than Rick and Morty, though be prepared for a lot more violence and raunch and nihilism than the Paramount+ show.
Created by The Simpsons’ Matt Groening and featuring a similar art-style (sans the yellow skin), Futurama is the grand-daddy of all adult-animated sci-fi shows. High-concept stories, crazy and hilarious characters (Bender is maybe the best among them), and some surprisingly emotional moments (prepare to cry when you watch the Jurassic Bark episode), are abound in Futurama, making it a truly worthwhile watch.
Rick and Morty’s Justin Roiland is back at it as the co-creator of Solar Opposites, which is streaming its third season on Hulu. Offering a similar style and humor to Rick and Morty, Solar Opposites tells the story of a family of aliens who crash land on Earth and must figure out a way to successfully live among the humans. The show has been met with considerable praise from both critics and audiences, with all seasons currently standing at higher than 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Star Trek: Discovery
It’s not animated and it’s not a comedy, but if you are a fan of Star Trek: Lower Decks and the general direction that Paramount+ and Alex Kurtzman are taking with the Star Trek franchise, then it’s worth looking at the show that started it all—Star Trek: Discovery.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
The trailer for season 3 of Star Trek: Lower Decks features a look at the space station Deep Space Nine and music from the 90’s show, so it might be worth checking out the show where these connections are coming from.
