The Smoke (2014)
Highly acclaimed by critics, The Smoke is an award-winning British drama that follows a London firefighter as he’s navigating his return to work after a horrific injury. The mini-series ran for 8 episodes back in 2014.
9-1-1 (2018)
If you’re a fan of dramas about the lives and work struggles of first responders, you’ll probably like 9-1-1. If you enjoy shows with Ryan Murphy’s name on them (think American Horror Story), then this series should be on your to-binge list. The series features an ensemble cast of names like Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Connie Britton and Jennifer Love Hewitt. There are currently 5 seasons available and the 6th is due for release in September 2022.
For The People (2018 – 2019)
While it only ran for a couple of seasons, For the People did a great job at telling the stories of young prosecutors and defense attorneys navigating the New York Federal Court System. While a bit underwhelming, the show’s portrayal of moral dilemmas faced by characters forced to play the game in a flawed system makes for an entertaining watch.
The Good Doctor (2017 – )
The Good Doctor stars Freddie Highmore (of Bates Motel fame) as Dr Shaun Murphy, a surgical resident who also happens to be an autistic savant. With a new season about to hit the small screens in October, now is a great time to start watching this medical drama.
Blue Bloods (2010 – )
Blue Bloods has been on the air for over a decade. The police procedural drama does a great job of shedding light on the day-to-day lives of an Irish-American family where police work is the family business. Many similar shows portray crime-stopping teams that are like family. In Blue Bloods, the main characters are actually family.
Criminal Minds (2005 – 2020)
During its 15 years on air, Criminal Minds managed to constantly surprise and horrify viewers. The series is centred on the BAU, a subdivision within the FBI, that’s focused on profiling and catching serial killers. The show is worth watching not just for the interesting cases, but also for its strong lead characters.
The Good Wife (2009 – 2016)
Written and developed by Robert and Michelle King, The Good Wife follows Alicia Florick, played by Julianna Margulies, the wife of a disgraced politician. She’s forced to make use of her law degree and get a job after the arrest of her husband. This is probably one of the best legal shows out there. It has lawyers, romance and drama, all backed up by clever writing.
