Mo Amer’s semi-autobiographical namesake comedy series has been making waves ever since it dropped on Netflix on August 24. The show follows Mo Najjar and his family as they’re trying to navigate the unique challenges that come with being Palestinian asylum seekers in the U.S. Seeing such a heavy topic approached with a dose of comedy and empathy was refreshing, to say the least. Of course, the show ended on a cliffhanger and has yet (at the time of writing) to be renewed for a second season. While we’re eagerly waiting for news on that front, here are a few similar shows you need to check out.

Ramy (2019 – )

Hulu’s Ramy is a comedy about the titular character’s struggles with finding a balance between his Muslim roots and the American culture he’s living in. Critics and fans have praised the drama’s honest portrayal of Muslim Americans, which is probably why Hulu keeps renewing it. Ramy Youssef, who created and stars in the series, is also the co-creator of Mo

Unorthodox (2020)

This Netflix miniseries offers a staggering glimpse into the challenges a young Jewish woman faces after fleeing her strict community to escape an arranged marriage. The critically-acclaimed show won several awards and it’s based on a memoir by Deborah Feldman.

Fresh off the Boat (2015–2020)

Fresh off the Boat is a charming comedy following the adventures of a Taiwanese-American family who opened a steakhouse in Florida. The series offers a hilarious and empathetic take to the fish-out-of-water premise over its 6-season run.

Gordita Chronicles (2022)

Gordita Chronicles premiered on HBO this summer and it portrays the hilarious exploits of a willful young girl whose parents emigrated to Miami in the 80s. Despite it being well received by fans and critics, HBO canceled the show. There is, however, hope that it might find a new home with a different network. Fingers crossed!

Little America (2020 – )

Little America is a Bafta-winning anthology series featuring the stories of various immigrants in the United States. The series is particularly relevant as it tackles issues like homophobia in the Arab community, the struggles of an undocumented teen, and the drama of a child whose parents get deported. There are currently two seasons out, totaling 16 impressive stories to watch.

Never Have I Ever (2020 – )

Never Have I Ever was co-created by Mindy Kaling, who you might remember from The Office. The show is a charming coming-of-age comedy loosely based on Kaling’s own story of growing up in Boston. You can now watch all 3 seasons on Netflix. Even better news, the show was also renewed for a 4th, that’s set to premiere next year.

Party of Five (2020)

2020’s Party of Five is a reboot of the 1995 series by the same name. However, in the contemporary version, the parents don’t die, they get deported to Mexico, leaving 4 teenage siblings and a baby to fend for themselves. While the series got the ax after its first season, it’s still worth a watch if you’re in the mood for an uplifting tearjerker.
