The setup for Fakes, a Netflix/CBC import, is interesting. The series sets up its narrative over the first two episodes from the perspectives of both main characters, Zoe (Emilija Baranac) and Becca (Jennifer Tong). The show starts with the aforementioned Zoe driving her BFF home after some heaving drinking. The poor girl is also going through some family trouble. (A mother who rules with an iron fist and a father who is having an affair). Rebecca finds the fake library card she made so she could study at the University. While drunk, she asks Zoey to make her a phony identification so she can make her one. However, in Becca’s mind, Zoe initiated charging Becca for a fake ID and starting a business.

The two leads are extraordinarily strong here and very funny. Fakes also has a fresh play on the story’s timeline. And even if the first season does not answer the question of the riff between the duo’s friendship breakup, the season finale leaves plenty of promise for an upcoming season.

Status: TBC

As we mentioned above, Fakes is a Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) series. This makes for a very cost-effective option for the streaming giant that recently announced cutting back on high-priced director projects. There is a precedent for this. Just last month, Prime Video just renewed a Julia Styles Canadian sitcom, The Lake, for a second season. The difference here is that Fakes may speak to a younger demographic network like Netflix crave.

Created by Warrior Nun‘s David Turko and from scribe Tabia Lau, Fakes is primed to be Netflix’s next great streaming hit. A young adult crime comedy with a mix of heart and verve that never goes out of style.

Prediction: Expect Fakes to be renewed at some point soon since CBC is picking up a majority of the tab.
