Like for Like – 5 series like Partner Track you must watch
A classy legal drama that follows the lives of a group of elite lawyers doing battle in the courtroom, trying to keep their lives in balance and stay out of jail at the same time. Suits ran for a total of 9 seasons and whilst some are certainly better than others, this show has long been a guilty pleasure.
Ally Mcbeal (1997-2002)
The quintessential 90’s legal romcom Ally Mcbeal was quirky, funny and shot through with heart. It is also notable for making the careers of Calista Flockheart, Lucy Liu, Jane Krakowski and Portia de Rossi. Ally Mcbeal has the distinction of giving us some inspired guest stars as love interests (Bon Jovi! Robert Downey Jr!). It feels very much like a spiritual parent to Partner Track, albeit slightly better done.
Sex and the City (1998-2004)
The PR material keeps telling us that Partner Track is Suits meets Sex and City, so it makes sense to include them both on this list. Sex and City defined a certain type of TV genre aimed at a certain audience and gave birth to a sort of frank dialogue between women about sex and relationships that had not been on the small screen before. If your exposure to SATC is limited to watching the awful movies from behind a cushion, you might be surprised at how much depth there is in the series.
Will and Grace (1998-2020)
Strictly speaking, Will and Grace is an out-and-out conventional sitcom, so slightly different from some of the other titles on this list but it does feature a lawyer (Will) and the frothy sensibility and snappy dialogue make it worthy of inclusion. It’s full of heart and there is a number of parallels in the way that Partner Track has set up the dynamics between characters.
Better Call Saul (2015-2022)
Okay, this is a reach. Tonally, Partner Track and Better Call Saul have almost nothing in common but they are both about lawyers so that’s good enough for me! Better Call Saul is on the list purely because, for my money, it’s the best TV show of the last 10 years, so if you haven’t got around to it yet, you should watch it without further delay.
