This article discusses Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale season 5, including the premise, release date, trailer, and cast.
The highly anticipated 5th instalment of Hulu’s hit show, The Handmaid’s Tale, is about to premiere. The show portrays a dystopian nightmare where fertile women are forced to act as broodmares for the elite. Over the past four seasons, we’ve followed June, known only as Offred at first (played by the talented Elizabeth Moss), as she tries to survive a theocratic society she can no longer recognize.
We spent the first 4 seasons bearing witness to the torture, rapes and forceful impregnation of women in Gilead. Season 4 ended with June exacting brutal revenge on her serial rapist and former commander, Fred Waterford, before arranging for his finger to be sent to his widow and June’s tormentor, Serena. It was a satisfying ending to a suspenseful season. The new instalment promises to be even more thrilling if that’s even possible.
Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 release date
Hulu is treating us to a 2-episode premiere on Wednesday 14th September 2022. From here, they will be released one episode per week.
How many episodes will there be?
In total, season 5 will have 10 episodes.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 premise
Season 5 is set to start exactly where the previous one left off. Hulu revealed the season’s synopsis: “June faces consequences for killing Commander Waterford while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose. The widowed Serena attempts to raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence creeps into Canada. Commander Lawrence works with Aunt Lydia as he tries to reform Gilead and rise in power. June, Luke and Moira fight Gilead from a distance as they continue their mission to save and reunite with Hannah.”
Our thoughts on the premise
June will face a series of new challenges. The rivalry between her and Serena has been heavily played out throughout the show, but it looks like things will come to a head this season. It will be interesting to see how the protagonist’s relationships with those around her, particularly Luke and Moira, evolve as she falls deeper in her revenge path. Was killing Fred a step too far? Was risking the full wrath of Gilead worth it? This season’s stakes are higher than ever.
Is there a trailer?
On the 14th of July, Hulu released a teaser trailer giving us our first glimpse into what’s to come.
The full trailer came out on the 24th of August. It looks like the main focus of this season will be a full-out war between June and Serena.
Both season 5 trailers of the dystopian drama set the scene for what’s going to be a spectacular piece of television. If the previous instalments are anything to go by, we’re in for a wild ride
Bruce Miller is returning at the helm as showrunner. The production team include Elisabeth Moss, Margaret Atwood, Ilene Chaiken, Warren Littlefield, Nina Fiore and Joseph Boccia.
