Easily the tensest installment yet as the sisters plan to kill JP on his birthday. Bibi becomes the focus of our attention in both timelines, with the series exploring multiple tragedies. The formula might be a tad repetitive now, but this is still a fascinating watch.

So far the flashbacks have revealed how JP ruined each Garvey sister’s life, one by one, and it was only a matter of time before we moved onto Bibi’s motives. My money was on JP being involved somehow with Bibi’s missing eye and in the fifth episode, the filmmakers explore this tragic plot point in detail. As always, the flashbacks concentrate on another scheme to kill JP and in the present, the sister who is the focus of the episode, is interrogated.

Bad Sisters season 1, episode 5 recap

Bibi is the focus of “Eye for an Eye” and in the opening seconds she has visions of a fatal car crash. There are two major car crashes in her past, both of which had massive effects on her life. Bibi’s parents died in a car crash and she lost her eye in a second. The Claffin brothers talk about these crashes, but they are mainly interested in JP’s crash, which led to Bibi’s traumatic injury. Bibi’s wife Nora doesn’t hold back, telling the insurance men exactly how it is. They hate JP and even though he is to blame for Bibi’s injury, he wouldn’t take any responsibility. Bibi tries to play down the incident, saying that she lost her eye and JP gained a hole in his head due to the accident, they’re evens now.

Back at the insurer’s office, Matthew finds a letter from their father that alludes to money woes and possible suicide. Matthew confronts Thomas about this letter, punching the brother square in the face. Thomas admits that their father was a crook and a liar, who spent all the business’s money and left them in serious debt. Thomas states that they can’t physically pay the claim and because of this cover up, they could face some serious jail time as well. Matthew is furious and turns to Becka for comfort.

In the flashback timeline, the girls go for another swim together. Eva explains that she destroyed JP’s phone, so hopefully he will drop the manipulative games with Ursula now. She says that the stress is causing her to lose sleep. Grace phones up to organize JP’s birthday and Ursula instantly bails. You’d expect the others to follow, but Bibi has a change of heart and signs them all up for a paintballing game. Her dreams are to kill JP at this get together by shooting him in the head. They ask Ursula for JP’s x-rays, so they can pinpoint exactly where the hole in his head is located and prepare to do battle.

Grace joins a dance class, but is overwhelmed by the other dancers’ competence and leaves straightaway. Whilst she is out, JP sprays their kitten with the hose, the kitten runs out into the road and is subsequently ran over by a passing car. He denies any responsibility and lets Grace take the blame. When she returns home, Grace believes she ran over the cat and her daughter says that she hates her to her face. JP is really shaping her into a horrible teenager indeed.

Ursula gets her hands on the x-ray and Bibi practices shooting a watermelon with her paintball gun. Her aim is off and even when she hits the fruit, nothing happens. There is not the slightest dent in the watermelon at all. Angered, Bibi storms off.

At work, Eva flirts with Gabriel and JP butters up his boss, inviting him on his boat and baking him his favorite cake. JP tries to make his boss dislike Eva too, ‘accidentally’ showing him photographs of Eva while she was drunk on JP’s boat. Eva goes out drinking with Gabriel and the two finally kiss, but he goes on to reveal that he is actually gay and just wants to be her friend, to Eva’s disappointment.

The ending

Bibi continues to practice her aim, using a bow and arrow this time around. She has triggered flashbacks of the car crash itself. JP drove her home one night. He was driving erratically though, speeding and overtaking like a mad man. Bibi protested, but he ignored her. She asked to get out, he ignored her and then they argued. JP swerved in the tussle and lost control of the vehicle, crashing the car in the process. Bibi decides to freeze the paintball pellets instead, which smashes the watermelon to pieces.

In the final scene, the girls attend JP’s paintballing party. He has asked to play a special game called ‘shoot the bunny’ and Grace is randomly chosen as the bunny of the game. She has to dress up as a rabbit and avoid been shot at. JP gleefully shoots at his wife numerous times during the game. Bibi swaps her pellets for the frozen ones and takes her aim. It’s a stressful and painfully tense sequence as Bibi hesitates taking the shot. Becka slaps her on the shoulder, just as she pulls the trigger, causing Bibi to shoot off target. She hits the paintball instructor in the face instead, taking out one of his eyes in the process. Bibi breaks down crying and then proceeds to punch Becka in the face for this idiocy. This is the most ironic of tragedies and JP evades death for the third time now.
