The Handmaid’s Tale is a highly successful series adaptation of the 1985 novel of the same name, written by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. The dystopian drama was created by Bruce Miller and stars Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne, an enslaved Handmaid, who becomes a freedom fighter in the aftermath of a modern day civil war. The series addresses the painful struggles between good and evil in the totalitarian nation of Gilead, as the child-bearing slaves attempt to escape their captors and start a revolution.

The show has become a cultural behemoth over the years, with the iconic Handmaids symbolizing political restraint and injustice in modern society. Whilst the series itself also works as a cautionary tale, almost like a warning of a dystopian future that could be, one that seems scarily plausible in these unprecedented times.

Now heading into its fifth season, the hit series, which has won countless awards, cemented itself a dedicated fan base and plenty of critical acclaim, looks to be really catching its stride. The filmmaking is flawless in every department, from the writing, to the directing, to the acting. This may be the best season yet, with some stunning performances and some truly impressive world-building. Even so, fans will be desperate to know whether the Hulu original will be returning for a sixth outing.

Will there be a season 6 of the Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale – renewed or cancelled status

Status: Renewed!

The Handmaid’s Tale has been renewed for a sixth and final season, less than a week before the fifth season premieres over on Hulu. Due to the show’s runaway success and consistent critical appeal, it was always going to be renewed, but it is interesting that the sixth season will also be the last from this series. The show runners clearly have an endgame in sight and will be working towards a satisfying conclusion to June’s torturous arc, as well as finding time to finish all the other characters’ storylines, those who we’ve come to love or hate over the years.

There is something freeing and comforting in the knowledge that a show has an end date to be working towards. Hopefully The Handmaid’s Tale can finish in style, bringing finality to this profound and hugely entertaining story that is more relevant now than it has ever been.
