Summary

The whole cast attempted to do what they could with the script given, but there is simply too much material to cover in such a short period, even to neatly make this finale worth watching.

This review of the Netflix film Fullmetal Alchemist: The Final Alchemy film does not contain spoilers.

When Fullmetal Alchemist: The Revenge of Scar was released, the story seemed to get a bit messy with all of its characters. It’s always difficult to adapt anime to live-action, and they did struggle with it again.

In the final and third film in the trilogy, Fullmetal Alchemist: The Final Alchemy, the Elric brothers’ long and winding journey comes to a close in an epic finale as they face off against an otherworldly, nationwide threat. The fight sequences remain the same and have been consistent throughout the entire trilogy. It brings the anime-style fighting from the original that creates the same vibe. It’s fast-paced and fun, but it’s also incredibly cheesy. The VFX work isn’t the best and can take you out of the film experience itself as well. Some secrets are revealed to wrap up this finale for the characters with whom fans have grown connected.

In this final installment, it seems that everything is falling apart for the characters. There were some surprising betrayals and some fun moments as well. It gave fans of the series everything they wanted. Even though the adaptation isn’t as strong as the original material, it’s still a decent finale that delivers some great moments. However, it feels that this finale is overstuffed with too many things to make it bigger and better than the second film, and that’s where it falters.

The whole cast attempted to do what they could with the script given, but there is simply too much material to cover in such a short period, even to neatly make this finale worth watching. They tried to make it engaging, but there are many characters that they didn’t do justice to in this third film.
