This article discusses the possibility of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 and its renewed or canceled status. It may contain spoilers.
Studio Trigger’s latest anime series, developed in collaboration with CD Projekt Red and spun off from their open-world RPG Cyberpunk 2077 (itself based on the 1988 tabletop RPG Cyberpunk 2020 from Mike Pondsmith), is one of the best animes of the year. And it’s continuing a run of extremely good form for Netflix when it comes to video game adaptations, with the smash-hit Arcane, the masterful four seasons of Castlevania, and the well-received recent Tekken adaptation all proving that perhaps the best medium for these things is animation.
But what does the future look like for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners? Is there more of the story to tell? Let’s find out.
Renewed or canceled status – will there be a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2?
At the time of writing Netflix hasn’t confirmed either way, but the odds are leaning more towards a cancellation on this occasion.
However, don’t be dismayed. Edgerunners was always considered to be a one-and-done series, and while it ends pretty conclusively in many respects, Night City and the rest of the Cyberpunk world are still ripe for exploration. CD Projekt Red have insisted that they’re determined to develop the IP despite the game’s troubled launch, and some multimedia development will doubtless be part of that approach. So, while I don’t imagine we’ll see a direct continuation of Edgerunners specifically, there is a very strong chance of us seeing another limited series set in the same universe, or perhaps a film or special feature.
Of course, take this with a pinch of salt. Money talks at the end of the day, so if this series does crazy numbers then you never know what might happen.
What is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners?
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners tells a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he chooses to stay alive by becoming an edgerunner—a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.
