This article discusses the Netflix documentary series The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist, including the premise, release date, cast, and trailer.
The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist is a new documentary series coming to Netflix on September 21 that will tell the story of the teenagers behind the series of robberies that happened to some celebrities in Los Angeles in 2009. While the story has already been adapted to the screen, Netflix will now focus on the story behind the convicted thieves.
The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist premise
From Netflix: “A group of LA teenagers arrested in 2009 for stealing from celebrity homes inspired a media frenzy and a movie. Now, two of them tell their stories.”
Our opinion of the premise
Of course, the story behind The Bling Ring was already told on screen by Sofia Coppola in her 2013 film of the same name, starring Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, and Katie Chang. However, while that movie focused on the teenagers behind the robberies, this will be their actual stories, told by them. One of them even says in the trailer that the movie failed to accurately depict what really happened, which means that Netflix’s docuseries will be highly original in many regards. This is certainly exciting, and could even be a good complementary piece to the Coppola film, as long as it’s clear for the viewer that one of them is told without any input from the thieves, and the other one is told from their own perspective, which might be a bit biased, to say the least.
