We couldn’t leave the original Disney classic out of this list. The 1940 version of Pinocchio is the most well-known, loved and still considered one of the best animations to have ever been created.
The 2019 live adaptation of Dumbo is about a baby elephant unlike the rest of the elephants. No, he’s not made of wood, and there’s no plot line where he wants to become human. But he has giant years, he can fly and the film is joyful.
Matteo Garrone’s Italian version of Pinocchio was a huge box-office success, it was acclaimed by critics and won more awards than we can count. If you liked this year’s Pinocchio, you’ll adore the 2019 version.
This made-for-TV adaptation tells the familiar story from the puppeteer’s perspective. Drew Carey plays the title role and the film earned a few Emmys for its refreshing take on the well-known narrative combined with excellent musical numbers.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
This one is more of a tear-jerker than a fantasy adventure but it does feature a little robot boy who tries to follow in Pinocchio’s footsteps after having read the book. The movie has a lot of heart and it’s among Steven Spielberg’s finest works.
The Adventures of Pinocchio (1996)
Similarly to 2022’s Pinocchio poor reception, critics weren’t very keen on the 1996 adaptation of the classic fable either. However, the film is a fun little live-action adaptation adding some new elements to the story, including a love interest for Geppeto.
Toy Story (1996)
This is one of the most beloved animation movies of all time. The Pixar classic is about toys that, just like Pinocchio, come to life. Unlike the wooden puppet, they keep their adventures a secret from humans.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
This classic Spielberg flick is a beautiful piece of cinematic artistry. It tells the story of a young boy who develops a friendship with a friendly alien that only wants to “go home.” It makes for a touching and heartwarming viewing experience.
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
The Wizard of Oz was the very first film to be produced in technicolor, which at the time was the height of cinematic technology. It’s a bit more dated than others on the list, but still a wholesome classic you should watch at least once.
Another Pixar offering, Wall-E is set in a post-apocalyptic world and follows the adventures of a lonely little robot who’s searching for a companion. The film is masterful at telling a story with the use of little to no dialog.
