This article discusses the potential of Santo Season 2 and its renewed or canceled status. It may contain some spoilers.
Netflix’s Santo is a pretty sprawling crime drama set and filmed on two continents, and concerning the hunt by two policemen for a notorious occultist kingpin named Santo, whose face has never been seen by anyone. It’s a twisty-turny whodunit, essentially, but rockets along at quite a pace and is deliberately unclear about many aspects. Fans will likely have many questions following the end of the first season, so there’s a pretty essential question that must be asked. Are we going to see more?
Renewed or canceled status – will there be a Santo Season 2?
Despite some conflicting online reports — I’ve seen rumors on dodgy sites that I’m not sure I trust — there doesn’t seem to have been an official confirmation of renewal from Netflix. Not yet, anyway. It’s still very early days, but there are several matters that need to be considered.
For one thing, the show takes place on two continents and looks very nice, which means it’s almost certainly very expensive to produce. Six episodes is a relatively short season order, so given the cost of production, it’s quite likely that more episodes were filmed and the season was simply divided into two halves. If that’s the case, then you could expect a follow-up early next year. If a new batch of six episodes needed to be filmed from scratch, the release date would likely be towards the end of 2023 or early 2024.
This is, of course, assuming that the show gets renewed, but that’s quite likely in this case. Being in both Spanish and Portuguese, filmed in both Spain and Brazil, Santo is very appealing to two of Netflix’s key demographics. There’s also the fact that the first season ended on a giant cliffhanger. With these two things in mind, Netflix have a vested interest in providing more of the show for fans.
Expect news of a second season sooner rather than later, I think.
