This article discusses whether there will be a Goodnight Mommy 2, a sequel to the Prime Video film Goodnight Mommy, and will contain spoilers.

Goodnight Mommy follows Elias and Lukas, two twin brothers (played by Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti) who visit their mother (Naomi Watts) at her countryside home, to find out she has her face covered in bandages, allegedly due to a recent cosmetic surgery. But there’s more than meets the eye — the twins start to suspect that Watts is not their actual mother, but an impostor. This is a theory that Lucas starts feeding Elias until the twist is revealed. Lucas died a year ago, and this is just Elias trying to cope with the pain of his loss. Moreover, after realizing this is the case, he pushes Mother to death.

Goodnight Mommy sequel potential release date

Goodnight Mommy seems like a very closed story, that doesn’t lend itself to a sequel. Prime Video has not announced plans to move forward with another entry, and it’s not likely they will. However, if movies like The Godfather or Joker can get a sequel, I suppose any movie can. If Prime Video were to move forward (see below for a potential sequel story), we would get a sequel not earlier than late 2023 or early 2024. If there is an idea for another film, and the studio is interested in pursuing it, they could probably write a script in a few months and shoot the film over the span of a few weeks.

Goodnight Mommy sequel cast – who might be in it?

If the sequel, as proposed below, is to follow the story of Elias’ mental health problems, you probably need to bring back Lucas and Mother, and potentially also Father (Peter Hermann).

Goodnight Mommy sequel plot: what could Goodnight Mommy 2 be about?

Following the steps of Joker 2, it would be interesting if the Goodnight Mommy sequel would see Elias in a mental health facility, sharing a room with his mother and brother. This way, they could further explore the matter of guilt and the ghosts from our own past and not repeat themselves with a similar movie to the first one. Father would also have to be involved to some degree, by regularly visiting him and keeping him in touch with the real world. Elias’ arc in the movie will have to be how he will conquer his demons and move on with his life. Think of A Beautiful Mind meets One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. It would mostly be set in a confined location with five or six different sets, which would reduce costs and speed up production.
