Contemporary culture’s fascination for serial killers continues apace, and the latest entry into the storied subgenre of “famous actors playing demented murderers” is Ryan Murphy’s Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. This isn’t a docuseries, though (that comes in October, with the latest season of Conversations With A Killer focusing on Dahmer), but instead a well-acted and impressively-shot drama in which long-time Murphy collaborator Evan Peters plays the notorious Milwaukee Monster in what is almost a live reading of his Wikipedia page.

But by focusing on the killer’s victims, this series mistakes humanity with a grim, torture-p**n aesthetic that really languishes on the suffering of the young men Dahmer targeted. Despite that lurid hook, though, the show will invariably do insane numbers for Netflix, meaning that people will be interested in its future. Here’s everything we know.

Renewed or canceled – will there be a Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story Season 2?

Status: Cancelled

The limited series was always intended to be a one-and-done affair. It chronicles the complete sweep of Dahmer’s life and crimes, and builds to his death in prison, along with the sense of closure that comes with it. There’s no room for the series to really progress, however well it performs for the streamer.

However, there’s plenty of mileage in the concept, and Ryan Murphy never came across an idea he couldn’t milk for all its worth. Talented actors in Murphy’s circle, playing everyone from Ted Bundy to John Wayne Gacy — who has an appearance in the finale of this series; John Carroll Lynch is presumably sat by the phone as I type this — to perhaps lesser-known psychos seems like an idea that Netflix and the vast potential demographic would certainly be interested in.

We’ll have to wait and see. Either way, a mainstream audience’s appetite for the macabre virtually guarantees that even though we might not see another season of this show, we’ll probably see one very much like it sooner rather than later.

You can stream Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story exclusively on Netflix.
