Jeffrey Dahmer, the serial killer behind the Netflix series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, is a horrifying subject matter – who is he and what happened to him? Ryan Murphy’s biographical series will provide deeper fictional context, but the man, also known as Milwaukee Cannibal or the Milwaukee Monster, is one of the most prolific serial killers in American history.
Between 1978 and 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer brutally murdered 17 men in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His victims were mainly gay and of color — the classic tale of a serial killer satisfying their sexual urges. He would eat his victim’s remains, perform sexual acts, and preserve corpses; a serial killer with the necrophilia and cannibalism hybrid.
What happened to the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer?
In 1991, time ran out for the serial killer. One of his victims escaped, and their experiences led the police to finally arrest the serial killer. What the police authorities found in his apartment was nothing short of ghastly and shocking. Preserved body parts and collections of all his victims. It was a horrific start to the police investigation; truly sickening.
Despite the overwhelming evidence, Dahmer denied that he ever went after people of color and claimed he had a specific body type that he usually went for. A claim frowned upon — the evidence of data suggested the serial killer had a specific sexual target that included the color of one’s skin.
The most contentious part of his trial was whether Jeffrey Dahmer was suffering from mental disorders. It was prosecution versus defense, arguing whether he was mentally stable to stop himself from partaking in the serious crimes. Experts came to the fray, specifying that Dahmer suffered from the schizotypal disorder, borderline personality disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Ultimately, the jury deemed that Jeffrey Dahmer was sane to understand that what he was doing was evil and immoral, especially due to his perceived persona to others — charming and friendly. The serial killer knew he was concealing a secret life, which did not work in his favor when mentally assessed in the courtroom.
What sentence was handed to Jeffrey Dahmer?
The highly debated topic of the death penalty surfaced during the serial killer’s trial. Wisconsin had abolished the death penalty, so it was purely a sentencing trial — Jeffrey Dahmer was convicted of 15 life sentences.
Prison life was hell for Jeffrey Dahmer; criminals aware of his crimes in the outside world repeatedly tried to kill him. The serial killer did try and convert to Christianity, but that was not enough to atone for his sins. Even those close to him admitted that the serial killer was accepting of the fact that he deserved to die.
Jeffrey Dahmer was murdered in prison on November 28, 1994, ironically by the hands of another murderer, Christopher Scarver. And to add to the irony, Scarver claimed that God told him to do it.
Solitary confinement, religion, and prison work duties were not enough to keep Dahmer away from his demons.
Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is not the only release covering the serial killer on Netflix. If you have been intrigued by the fictional biographical series that focuses more on the victims, then on October 7, 2022, a popular docuseries returns — Conversations With A Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes.
