Everest (2015)

Based on the real-life 1996 Everest disaster, the movie tells the story of a group who successfully reached the famous summit before facing fatal consequences upon their descent. Starring Jason Clarke as Rob Hall, the film was both a commercial success and critically acclaimed.

Into the Wild (2007)

Another biographical entry, Into the Wild, follows Christopher McCandless (played by Emile Hirsch), a young man who decided to live his privileged upper-middle-class life behind in favor of living in the wilderness. It’s a beautifully-shot film exploring the life of someone who preferred the solitude of nature vs. the comforts of modern living.

Alive (1993)

This one is slightly different from other titles on this list because the characters didn’t make the conscious decision of having to survive the elements. Instead, this film is about members of a Rugby team who have to fend for themselves in the freezing wilderness after their plane crashes. Alive was directed by Frank Marshall and it’s based on a true story.

The Scream of the Stone (1991)

This German film from three decades ago shows stunning scenery and a worthwhile story. It’s about two competitive mountain climbers who want to race up the Cerro Torre, in Argentina, an infamously dangerous peak to reach.

Touching the Void (2003)

This docudrama will have you at the edge of your seat. It stars Brendan Mackey and Nicholas Aaron as famous climbers Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, respectively. In 1985 the two mountaineers climbed Siula Grande. The film shows just how dangerous their journey was with narration from the actual people who survived it.

North Face (2008)

This movie follows two German men who in 1936 took on the dangerous task of reaching the Eiger. They planned to climb the North face of the Alps, which happens to be the most dangerous route going.

127 Hours (2010)

In this terrifying tale of survival, James Franco plays Aron Ralston, a man who found himself stuck in with his hand under a boulder in the Canyonlands National Park, Utah. Based on real-life events, the film shows the incredible lengths a person can go to survive a dire situation.

The Way (2010)

Written by Emilio Estevez, The Way is a touching drama about a father whose son died while trying to hike the pilgrimage Way of St James. Overwhelmed by grief, the man decides to finish what his son started and meets a few fellow pilgrims on the way. While not as heart-stomping as other films on this list, The Way is a must-watch for any lover of the great outdoors and adventure movies.

Wild (2014)

Following her divorce, a woman (played brilliantly by Reese Witherspoon) decides to put her life on hold and solo hike over 1000 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail. This inspirational film is based on the autobiographical book written by Cheryl Strayed.

The Revenant (2015)

Possibly Leonardo DiCaprio’s finest work to date, The Revenant retells the true story of frontiersman Hugh Glass, who found himself having to survive in the wilderness after being left behind by his hunting crew. This role won Leo his very first Oscar, so the film is worth watching for that alone.
