Like For Like – 5 films like Drifting Home you must watch

Bubble (2022)

Also streaming on Netflix, Bubble features a visually stunning, post-apocalyptic world that is overcome with strange bubbles that break the laws of gravity and reality. It’s an odd film, as is Drifting Home, but there is a similar tone and earnestness that will be appealing to fans of this type of anime.

A Whisker Away (2020)

Produced by Studio Colorido, the same production company responsible for Drifting Home, A Whisker Away tells the story of a young girl who finds a mask that transforms her into a cat, an ability she promptly uses to try and woo a boy that previously disliked her.  This is a strange story, and it’s a strange movie really, one that does not have the same stakes, action, and mainstream appeal of Drifting Away, but the similar animation style and tone could interest anime fans.

 Castaway on the Moon (2009)

Castaway on the Moon is one the best romance/survival movies to come out of South Korea. It’s deeply original and deeply underrated. The film follows a suicidal businessman after he is stranded on an island in the middle of Seoul and his unlikely connection with an agoraphobic young woman who likes to look at the moon with a massive telescope. I cannot stress how excellent this film is.

Swiss Family Robinson (1964)

If you liked the story of a group of people doing their best to survive in total isolation from the rest of the world as they forge strong bonds, then you should watch Swiss Family Robinson, the classic example of this story.

Robinson Crusoe (1997)

The novel Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe essentially created the survival genre, so it might be worth checking out this solid 1997 adaptation starring Pierce Brosnan, if you enjoyed the survival aspect of Drifting Home.
