This article discusses 5 reasons to watch the Netflix series The Empress and does not contain any spoilers.
Netflix will soon be releasing its latest period drama series, The Empress, and we couldn’t be more excited. The show chronicles Elisabeth of Austria, or Sisi, in the early years of her marriage to Emperor Franz Joseph. The German show looks like it will be very entertaining based on its trailer, but here are five solid reasons to watch it.
5 Reasons To Watch The Empress
Reason 1: It will tide fans over until the next season of Bridgerton
For fans of shows like Reign, The Tudors, and Bridgerton, it seems that The Empress could be a new favorite. It promises the same strong heroine, sex appeal, and creative costuming that many people have loved on those shows. Especially while fans are waiting for Netflix to release Bridgerton‘s third season, The Empress could fill that spot.
Reason 2: The costumes look gorgeous
While they certainly don’t look the most historically accurate, the trailer shows sumptuous costumes with beautiful fabrics and colors. Beautiful gowns are certainly one of the draws of almost any period drama series, and The Empress does not look like it will disappoint if lavish costumes are what you’re after.
Reason 3: It’s co-directed by a woman
The series is directed by Katrin Gebbe and Florian Cossen. Gebbe is an up-and-coming German director who studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Enshede as well as the Hamburg Media School. Her first feature film, Nothing Bad Can Happen, debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013. It’s always exciting to see a female creative voice on a project that is depicting the life of a female figure.
Reason 4: Sisi has often been compared to Princess Diana
Princess Diana has always been beloved, but with the upcoming season of The Crown and the death of another British royal, she’s now on people’s minds once again. Comparisons have been drawn between Elisabeth of Austria and the late Princess Diana. They both struggled with how to raise their children in a royal household, dealt with an eating disorder, and were held to ridiculous standards in the media.
Reason 5: Elisabeth led a fascinating life
Married at the age of 15 to the heir to the Austrian empire, Empress Elisabeth of Austria led an intriguing life that is lesser known in English-speaking countries than royal figures like Elizabeth I or Marie Antoinette. Throughout her life, she struggled with intense beauty standards, her draconian mother-in-law, an eating disorder, and mental health issues. She traveled widely and was very involved in culture and pursued many hobbies. Her son died in the Mayerling Incident, a double-suicide with his young mistress that is still somewhat mysterious, and she was assassinated by a political radical. Hopefully, some of the truth of her life will be portrayed in the series.
