With the hype building around Avatar: The Way of Water, it begs the question: is this the most anticipated sequel in our lifetimes? Almost thirteen years to the day since the original film was released in cinemas, fans are expecting big things to follow what was a technologically groundbreaking first film.

But with such a long time since the original movie was released, and plenty of setbacks along the way, has anticipation grown to fever-pitch, or has excitement for the sequel died out? Get the most up-to-date information on Avatar 2 right here.

When is Avatar 2 coming out, UK?

The Avatar 2 UK release date is Friday, 16th December, 2022. Those looking to relive the action of the original film don’t have to wait though, as it’s been re-released in cinemas ahead of the sequel and is available to watch now.

Why has Avatar 2 taken so long?

??Considering James Cameron’s original Avatar received much praise from audiences and was groundbreaking in terms of its CGI, many people have been left wondering why the sequel has taken so long to reach cinemas.

A variety of factors have held the Avatar franchise from reaching audiences sooner, namely Cameron wanting the very best for the new films. Cameron had a vision for Avatar 2 from the offset, but the technology to bring this vision to life has only been developed in the last few years, meaning the film’s production has had to wait.

Another setback was a screenplay that was written, proved not to be up to scratch, and was eventually scrapped after taking a year to put together. The writing of scripts has also added to the delays, with Cameron developing further sequels for the franchise, which had to be written alongside production of Avatar 2. These, plus a number of other factors, have contributed to the 13 year wait fans have had to endure.

Avatar 2 cast, plot and more

Although we don’t yet know too many details of the film’s plot, we know it is set over a decade after the original film and will follow the Sully family as they try to keep each other safe, and explore new regions of the planet Pandora. As the Avatar 2 trailer shows, the film will feature a lot of underwater locations, which will create a visually breathtaking experience for the audience.

Many of the cast will return from the first film, with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña and Sigourney Weaver all returning for the sequel, as well as Kate Winslet who will join them on screen, playing the part of a Na’vi Warrior. In terms of money, the Avatar 2 budget totals $250 million, a staggering amount of money that exceeds the original film’s budget, so hopefully fans can experience a movie that really pushes the boundaries of what we have come to expect from cinema.

Do we have more Avatar to come?

According to rumours, the Avatar franchise is expected to have a total of five films as part of its collection, meaning that even after Avatar: The Way of Water, fans can expect to see another three films released. As it stands, Avatar 3 is expected in 2024, Avatar 4 in 2026 and Avatar 5 in 2028, although as we have seen with Avatar 2, setbacks are likely. Despite the high chance of delays, Avatar 3 and 4 are rumoured to be either partially or completely filmed already, so a release may come without setbacks.
