Hip-Hop Evolution (2016 – 2020)
This Netflix documentary series follows the history of hip-hop from its origins in the seventies all the way to the modern day. It’s a fascinating profile of the ever-changing musical genre with in-depth interviews and detailed analysis. Each episode centers on a different era or aspect of the genre, providing an entertaining education on one of the most profitable areas of music. Kid Cudi himself is no stranger to this field and has produced some of hip-hop’s best songs.
Love, Death & Robots (2019 – present)
Tim Miller (Deadpool) and David Fincher’s animated anthology series really pushes the envelope on adult animation with an array of filmmakers showcasing their talents via these delightful collections of short films. Entergalactic has its own distinct visual style, but borrows heavily from many differing areas of animation. Love, Death & Robots is a dark, twisted Netflix original that combines sci-fi, horror and animation to astound audiences. Kid Cudi’s Entergalactic may have a more low-key vibe to it, but it has that same flair for visuals that makes both worth watching.
High Fidelity (2020)
The Hulu original may have only lasted one season, but it has its supporters, with most praising Zoe Kravitz for her standout performance. The series is loosely based on the film and novel of the same name, with Kravitz taking on John Cusack’s famous role. High Fidelity is a rom com that adores music, and all three of those genres are at play in Entergalactic. Music lovers will find something to love in both of these projects.
The Defiant Ones (2017)
HBO’s four-part series The Defiant Ones explores the history of Dr. Dre and record producer Jimmy Iovine and their subsequent partnership as co-founders of Beats Electronics. It is vital viewing for all music lovers, especially those obsessed with rap music. Both mega-stars have intriguing backstories and go into depth about their eventful careers. Available on Netflix in the UK.
Girls (2012 – 2017)
Lena Dunham’s HBO series tells the story of four young women living in New York City. Entergalactic is also set in The Big Apple, concentrating on the exciting lives of youthful, outgoing individuals. Both explore the complexities of relationships and both aren’t embarrassed to discuss the subject of sex in detail either. Girls was criticized for featuring an all-white cast in its premiere, with a lack of racial diversity in general, but it still draws parallels. Both explore the excitement of young love and cultural creativity in an eclectic city.
Undone (2019 – present)
Another adult animated series, this time from Prime Video. Undone uses rotoscoping to create its distinctive look. The series focuses on Alma, who can manipulate time after a car crash. Much like Entergalactic, there is room for lots of dream-like sequences and space for the animators to let loose with their imaginations. Both use animation to tell an adult story, with striking results.
Adam by Eve: A Live in Animation (2022)
Netflix is a company that seems happy to pay out large sums of money to produce vanity projects for artists who want to promote their latest piece of work. Just like Kid Cudi with Entergalactic, here Japanese singer Eve gets the TV special treatment. The special features a smorgasbord of differing animation techniques, uses the artist’s latest LP as a soundtrack and tries admirably to incorporate all this into a succinct narrative. The finished article may not be as well-made as Entergalactic, but includes some truly mesmerizing animated sequences.
Love Life (2020 – present)
This romantic anthology series from HBO Max follows a different character’s love life in each separate season. Season two stars Jessica Williams and Keith David, who also appear in Entergalactic. Love Life looks in depth at every romance in one person’s life, from their first until their last. It’s a clever concept that allows the filmmakers the opportunity to tell endless stories.
Black-ish (2014 – 2022)
Kenya Barris, who created the American sitcom Black-ish, is also the executive producer of Entergalactic. He came to prominence with this highly successful ABC series, which ran for eight consecutive seasons. The show follows wealthy advertising executive Andre Johnson, who worries his family are losing their black identity. It’s a hilarious and thought-provoking series that rightfully deserved such a long run.
Jeen-Yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy (2022)
Three-part docuseries about the crazy career and equally eventful personal life of Kanye West. This Netflix original explores his humble beginnings all the way to the dizzying billionaire highs that would soon follow. It is hard to talk about Kid Cudi without at least mentioning Kanye West. They have a long and arduous history of working collaboratively together, but have since parted ways. I’d say that they both bring out the best in each other, but are both entirely different types of people. This series only really scratches the surface of that complex character and his insane life story. A definite companion piece to Kid Cudi’s own documentary, A Man Named Scott.
