After losing its home at EPIX, HBO Max decided to give Pennyworth a chance, the prequel series to Gotham. Pennyworth season 3 will premiere on October 6th, 2022, and fans will be anticipating what the series’ new home means. Will it be better? Will the story improve? Here is the official synopsis of the third season:

“Season three of the psychological thriller begins after a five-year time jump: the civil war is over, and a cultural revolution has changed the world for better or worse – ushering in a new age of Super Heroes and Supervillains.”

Judging by the time jumps and a cultural revolution that has changed the world, this could be a make-or-break third season for Pennyworth. Here is the cast for the third installment:

  • Emma Paet.
  • Paloma Faith.
  • Ryan Fletcher.
  • Dorothy Atkinson.
  • Ramon Tikaram.
  • Harriet Slater.
  • Simon Manyonda.

However, with the jump to HBO Max comes a new title that has confused fans — Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler. There have been many threads on the internet debating why they would change the title after two seasons. Doing so makes the entire series format convoluted and messy and rarely works. However, with the universe it’s residing in, the series could pull off a new title format.

Why does Pennyworth season 3 have a different title?

There could be many reasons for the change, but without an official announcement as to why we decided to break it down into some theories for you.

Marketing

With Pennyworth lunging to HBO Max, it’s possible that they changed the title for marketing reasons. Changing the title, it gets fans talking and discussing what the change could mean. And it’s worked, after all. When the trailer landed, many spoke about the title change more than the story itself. While this is tactless marketing, we suspect the change had a deeper meaning.

Changing the title made it more about Batman

It’s possible that the title change was to bring in new fans. Maybe the producers behind the show believed that many had no idea what Pennyworth was about and that it resided in the world of Batman. And so, it brings in more Batman fans that would have otherwise not watched it. This feels like a stretch, but we must clutch at straws with the confusing change.

The third season will have more superhero elements

Changing the title ups expectations. It could be that the series is now moving towards a direction whereby they delve more into Batman, and superhero elements are introduced more in the show.

Of course, many fans have taken the title change with humor, while others have ridiculed the Pennyworth title change. Some have labeled it preposterous and offensive, as the shift suggests that fans do not know who Batman’s Butler is. However, this tweet here is undoubtedly a favourite of mine:
