A Friend of the Family episode 3 took the option of flashing back in time to two years before Jan Broberg’s abduction and portrayed in disturbingly vivid detail the manner in which her abductor, Robert Berchtold, worked his way into the affections of both her and her family and the manipulative tactics he used to get close to them. Here’s what happened in “The Gift of Tongues”:
- Robert reached out to Bob and Mary Ann to help him with the intimacy problems of his marriage.
- Bob and Mary Ann were manipulated by Robert (possibly Gail as well) into allowing him to take Jan away with them and their kids on a trip where he drugged Jan with an ‘allergy pill’.
- Bob was talked into committing a sex act on Robert due to his frustrations with his marriage problems.
- Berchtold was shown to be getting released from the Mexican prison he was incarcerated for transportation back to America.
A Friend of the Family season 1, episode 4 release date/time
The next episode is scheduled to be released on Peacock on Thursday, October 13th, 2021. The release time is 8:00 am GMT. Episode 4 is titled “Articles of Faith” and will have a run time of fifty-six minutes.

Predictions
Berchtold’s delight at being told he was heading back to the US clearly indicates that his horrific behaviour and manipulations of Jan and her family is not over yet. Some predictions:
- It’s not clear yet what the reasoning is behind Berchtold being transferred back to America, but it’s possible it’s for a trial.
- The last time we saw Jan after being rescued, we saw that she was still being swayed by his poisonous influence. It’s likely we’ll see the effects this has had on her since returning home.
- We’ve also witnessed the profound effects that Robert has had on both Mary Ann and Bob, both in very differing ways. We may very likely see the impact he has had personally on their marriage.
- If there is a trial, it’s possible we might see Robert’s attempts at seducing Mary Ann and his manipulation of Bob into committing a sexual act with him come to light.
