Summary

An entertaining episode, although slightly strange as there isn’t a central story to it. Instead, it focuses on several mini storylines.

This recap of the HBO Max series Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler season 3, episode 5, “Rhyme ‘n’ Reason,” contains spoilers.

By the end of the episode, it looked like the trouble with Thomas‘s father was over. But will there be any more surprises for them? Read the below recap to find out.

Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler season 3, episode 5 recap

It’s been a month since Thomas shot Martha, and he is plagued by nightmares over recent events. It freaks Martha out, and she aims her gun at him. They’re at odds with each other — so much so that Martha feels betrayed by him choosing his father over her. Mary is dressed nicely, which leads to Alfie wondering where she’s going. It turns out that she is going to meet up with Roger, the same man who fled in the previous episode.

Alfie goes to the Prime Minister’s office. And whilst the Prime Minister would like to lock Alfie up for breaking Thomas out of the Tower of London, Alfie is too valuable to him. Meanwhile, Patricia tells Martha and Thomas that she plans to stay with them. Are they happy about that very fact? Absolutely not. As Alfie and Dave stalk Zahra, they save her from being shot to death. Bet continues to search for Jon Salt. And that search leads back to Frances Gaunt. But she has a choice to make. But as Frances puts it, if she wants Jon Salt’s location so much, she must give up Julie. However, Bet loves Julie. But that’s not why she won’t give her up, apparently. Bet claims that it’s because she is stubborn.

Alfie takes Zahra to a safe house, in other words, one of the safest places in London, the public house. Thomas and Martha try to tell Patricia that it’ll be uncomfortable for her to stay at the house. Soon after, Patricia reveals that their father told her to come home. It makes Thomas snap, and he tells Patricia not to mention their father again. Roger asks Mary to help him live an exciting life. So, at Mary’s request, they start to dance in the park.

The ending

Armed men storm into the public house, but as there are only two of them, they are soon outnumbered. It then turns out that Gary is one of the men. Alfie doesn’t want Gary to die and tells Zahra that Gary could lead her to the person who betrayed her. But she already knows who it is, her right-hand guard, Win. But rather than kill him, she asks who put him up to this. And in the next scene, he is gagged and tied up outside a hotel room.

In the next scene of Pennyworth, Alfie and Zahra kiss each other, and sure enough, they end up in bed together. There, Zahra comes clean about her reasons for being in town. Despite her father apparently being dead, she has heard rumors that he is still alive — with Alfie later speculating to Dave that they might have captured her father. When Martha wakes up, Thomas is gone. It turns out that he is boarding a plane to Gotham. At the end of the episode, Bet believes that she has finally located Jon Salt. But when she follows him, he leads her into an alleyway. She shoots him several times just after he tells her that he has been remodeled. Seconds later, he stands up, revealing himself to have a robotic stomach, and his guards knock Bet out.
