This article discusses the possibility of The Watcher Season 2 and its renewed or canceled status. It contains spoilers for the first season.

Ian Brennan and Ryan Murphy haven’t yet come across a creepy true story that they couldn’t turn into a Netflix limited series, and the latest is The Watcher, a dramatization of a bizarre mystery at 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey, coming hot on the heels of the phenomenal success – if you want to call it that – of the duo’s Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

The incident was first explored in a 2018 New York Magazine article. The general idea runs thusly: In 2014, the Broaddus family purchased a very nice home in Westfield, and were subsequently forced to sell it at a loss after receiving a string of increasingly demented missives from someone calling themselves “The Watcher”. Whoever was behind the letter knew intimate details of the house and the family’s comings and goings and implied rather strongly that the children were at risk.

Murphy and Brennan take the basic idea of the story and expand on it a little with some of the new developments that have occurred since that original story, and they also posit a relatively clear theory about who’s responsible. However, the case remains unsolved, so that does beg some questions about the show’s potential future.

Renewed or canceled status – will there be a Season 2 of The Watcher on Netflix?

Status: TBC

The Watcher has been billed, unambiguously, as a limited series, and despite the fact it’s virtually a guaranteed hit, it’ll probably stay that way.

As proved by the way Brennan and Murphy transitioned straight from Dahmer to this story, there are virtually an infinite number of deplorable killers and unsolved mysteries they could turn their attention to. There’s no reason, artistically or financially, to return to this particular well.

And that’s probably a good thing. While the show doesn’t end conclusively, it provides a fairly strong theory about who the Watcher is, and also leaves our main characters in an interesting place personally. The note of ambiguity that the show ends with is an effective one, as we’re left to ponder how the case might continue to affect those involved.

What might The Watcher Season 2 be about?

For the sake of argument, if we were to speculate about what the future of this show might look like, I think it would make sense to focus on the house itself rather than Dean and Nora Braddock, who here were stand-ins for Derek and Maria Broaddus.

By all accounts, the Broadduses weren’t the first to become “victims” of the Watcher and might not be the last. Since the New York Magazine article was reportedly part of the rights package secured by Netflix, moving away from it and focusing either on new developments that have occurred since or taking full artistic license and imagining a follow-up would probably be the ways to go.

The second season could focus on the so-called Westfield Preservation Society as they attempt to keep the house unchanged, perhaps with several new owners moving into the property.
