For weeks, fans on socials were obsessing over one thing for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power — who is Sauron — after an explosive season 1 finale, it’s confirmed that Halbrand is Sauron — let’s discuss that major reveal, and what we can expect from The Rings of Power season 2.

Hindsight is a beautiful thing. There were many clues surrounding Halbrand, not to mention the fact that Galadriel found the man in the middle of the ocean. Perhaps the biggest clue of all is that the writers created Halbrand as an entirely new character. Sauron goes by many names, so it makes sense to attach the Dark Lord to a name that no one is familiar with.

The plot twist was delivered in the first episode; the High King Gil-galad told Galadriel that her expedition to find Sauron might bring back evil, the one thing she did not desire. But her lust to get rid of evil after a peaceful age led her to be ultimately deceived by Sauron.

Sauron is known for trickery, deception, smithery, and strategy. While Tolkien describes Sauron as someone with “good motives” for attempting to rebuild Middle-earth, his darkness is what compels him. Despite his perceived resistance, he wanted Galadriel to take him to The Southlands, now renamed the famous Mordor. It’s possible that all of the events we saw unfold since The Rings of Power episode 1 were meticulously planned by Sauron to rebuild order in Middle-earth. He’s a cunning entity, a troubled character — almost ironically tragic in the way that Tolkien describes him.

But perhaps the greatest theory is that Sauron found confidence with the “light in the world” by being by Galadriel’s side. He was adamant that their allegiance could work once Galadriel realized that Halbrand was not part of the broken lineage to be King of The Southlands. Sauron, in the form of Halbrand, felt comfort from the light that Galadriel offered by fighting “side by side.” He wanted Galadriel to be his balance, situated beside him in Middle-earth as his Queen, a scenario Galadriel describes in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

The pain and suffering Galadriel will endure due to her encounter with Sauron will surely be the cornerstone of the second season, and we can predict that Elrond will strengthen his bond with her, offering comfort.

Halbrand is Sauron, but there’s so much more of this story to explore in an enticing landmark series.

Halbrand is Sauron – what to expect from The Rings of Power season 2

Sauron will rebuild Mordor in his vision

A lot of season 1 was world-building. When Halbrand fled after the major reveal, he returned to Middle-earth in his authentic form, Sauron. Smiling wickedly, it appears that Sauron’s good motives have left him, especially after his failed allegiance with Galadriel.

He will have to deal with Adar first, the orc leader that claimed to have killed Sauron. How will this unfold? It’s possible that Adar will resist Sauron’s influence, especially after being enemies in the past. Adar has a fondness for the orcs, calling them his children, so it will be interesting to see what happens between these characters.

Mordor is a dark and deadly place, but under Sauron, it will become the one place that Elves, Dwarves, and Men fear.

Sauron, in the guise of Halbrand, will influence Dwarves and Men to forge powerful rings

We’ll see a much more strategic Sauron in The Rings of Power season 2. One where he will attempt to inflict his influence to gain power. It only took him a couple of days with the Elves to realize how to curate true power over Middle-earth. Ultimate power using his masterful smithery. Sauron is deceptively evil, but his presence can fool anyone. It will be interesting to see if it’s revealed to others that Halbrand is Sauron and, ultimately, how this will lead to the forging of more rings. Will Celebrimbor continue to work with Sauron to forge more rings? He appeared to be under his dark spell in The Rings of Power season 1 finale.

Sauron, in secret, will forge the One Ring

Forging the rings for different races will not be enough. It’s safe to say that the Elves will be safe from Sauron’s power, but Sauron will move towards controlling Middle-earth by forging the “One Ring to rule them all.” It would be surprising if Sauron did not do this in private and, ultimately, take his reign once he places the One Ring on his finger. What a season 2 finale that would be (depending on the pace of the story).

Elrond will keep Halbrand’s identity a secret

At the end of season 1, Elrond learned that Halbrand was not who he said he was. Did he figure out his true identity? This leaves the Elf in a precarious position, especially after forging the rings for the Elves to save their kind. His loyalty to Galadriel will be tested. If the Elves learn that Galadriel unintentionally brought Sauron to them, which led to the forging of the rings, then there would be significant repercussions for Galadriel. We imagine that Elrond will be a supportive, loving friend for Galadriel, sympathizing with her trauma.

Durin and his father will have to save their home Khazad-dûm

The Dwarves were sadly left out of The Rings of Power season 1 finale, but we all know trouble is afoot at home. By digging too deep for Mithril, has caused another problem — Balrogs. Expect a cool, chaotic chapter in season 2, as the Dwarves will need to fight for their lives.

The Stranger, aka Gandalf, and Nori, will enjoy a separate story

Yes, yes, yes. Readers may roll their eyes at this suggestion, but it’s all but nearly confirmed that The Stranger is Gandalf. And if he isn’t, then the writers have done plenty to fool us. We expect Nori Brandyfoot and The Stranger to enjoy a separate story. It wouldn’t make sense to throw them into the mix of the main story so soon. While many will be frustrated if it turns out that The Stranger is Gandalf (while others delighted), it’s clear that the writers have done enough to compel viewers into a heartwarming story between a wizard and a hobbit.
