This article is a preview for The Walking Dead season 11, episode 20, “What’s Been Lost”, and contains details of the release date, time, and where to watch online. It may contain spoilers for previous episodes.

The final ever episodes of The Walking Dead are well underway now, but I suppose that depends on how you interpret the word “final”. For a series that has never really treated death with any permanence, it only seems fitting that these characters and stories will continue to live on in spin-offs, as they have already in Fear the Walking DeadThe Walking Dead: World Beyond, and Tales of The Walking Dead

We’ve already had confirmation that there will be a Daryl and Carol spin-off, although recently it seems as though it might just be a Daryl spin-off, and at this year’s New York Comic Con we got our first look at the upcoming The Walking Dead: Dead City, which will feature Maggie and Negan and is slated for release in April 2023. With all that, it’s hard to consider the upcoming end… well, the end.

The Walking Dead season 11, episode 19 got a big bogged down by Eugene’s usual nonsense, but it had some fun zombie shenanigans elsewhere. Here’s what happened:

  • Following Sebastian’s death, Pamela is out for revenge, so she pushes Mercer to apprehend him and Max. She’s willing to pardon Max if she reads a pre-written apology and blames everything on Eugene, who’s looking at a rigged trial and potentially public execution.
  • Max spends most of the episode on the run until she’s eventually captured. Eugene remains at the church with Daryl into he decides to turn himself in to save Max.
  • Pamela sics the zombified version of Sebastian on Hornsby.
  • Aaron, Jerry, Lydia, and Elijah are travelling back to Oceanside and Alexandria but are forced to stop off at an abandoned, themed town, where they’re attacked by a new variant of Walkers who can climb and use weapons.

Preview for “What’s Been Lost”:

Here’s an official synopsis for The Walking Dead season 11, episode 20:

Daryl and Carol search for their disappeared friends.

From this we can make some assumptions:

  • From the synopsis, it seems like the Commonwealth are trying to isolate the Alexandrians. Carol and Daryl will presumably set out to spring them.
  • Where are we going with the variants? Are they going to blight our heroes all the way back to Oceanside and Alexandria?
  • Hornsby is slippery enough to get out of the Sebastian situation, but at this point, it’s hard to say what utility he might have at this stage.

You can stream The Walking Dead season 11, episode 20 right now on AMC+, and catch it on AMC from October 23.
