This article discusses “Where was the Hulu film Matriarch filmed” and does not contain spoilers.

As we all know, the British countryside within the horror genre is often sinister and used many times. In Matriarch, a woman is afflicted with a mysterious disease after surviving an overdose. She returns to her childhood home to confront her demons but instead discovers a real one.

The film is about Laura (Jemima Rooper), who is an alcoholic who goes down a self-destructive path while alienating everyone around her. After 20 years, she returns home and finds herself drawn to this rustic village after the overdose that nearly killed her.

Her mother Celia (Kate Dickie) is the one who called her and is the matriarch of the film’s title. Celia and Laura never saw eye to eye, and it is one of the many reasons why Laura left in the first place. The film turns out to be a torturous one as Laura is held against her will when she is vulnerable by her mother. Celia takes full control of Laura’s body by drugging her. It’s hard to imagine being locked up in the home where you grew up with your mother harming you as an adult years later.

The overdose woke Laura up to what has been happening in that small town and she begins to investigate. She worries about her mortality and searches for a cure when she starts to bleed back blood and feels the disease overcome her. Matriarch is filmed in writer-director Ben Steiner’s hometown so it feels a bit more personal. Not many filmmakers tend to go there but he wanted to make something grounded in his roots for his directorial feature debut. It was a nice touch because he was able to find some unique locations that worked for the film. It’s different when you’re from the city you’re choosing to shoot in because there are hidden gems that other people will get to see on screen for the first time.

Where was the Hulu film Matriarch filmed – a breakdown of locations

Bristol

Not many filmmakers shoot in Bristol, but writer-director Ben Steiner wanted his feature debut to be set in the city. The majority of the time Bristol is the location where action-adventure films about pirates are shot.

The Mount Without

Most of the village church scenes were shot inside The Mount Without, which is one of the most recognizable churches for those familiar with the location. Again, something that a local would know and is nice to show to others.

Berkeley Square

The urban sections were filmed on Berkeley Square and close to SS Great Britain.

Sutton Mallet

The rest of the film was shot in Sutton Mallet, and Ben Steiner wanted it to have a different feel than the other locations. The majority of the shots you see will be in this location because of the sinister aesthetic that was crafted surrounding the lead actors.
