Fantasy films are complete escapism from our ordinary, sometimes mundane lives, and let us be part of a world that is completely different from our own. The School for Good and Evil is the latest fantasy teen film to hit our streaming services and here is a list of ten similar films that you must watch.

10 films like The School for Good and Evil you must watch

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001)

If you didn’t know about the Harry Potter franchise, where have you been? This is probably the biggest fantasy film franchise in history. Harry Potter is a film series based on the novels by J. K. Rowling and is produced and distributed by Warner Bros. There are a total of eight magical films for you to indulge repeatedly, beginning with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and ending with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. With a giant worldwide fanbase, these stories have inspired generations and will continue to in the future. There is a star-studded cast, memorable moments, and some of the best set design seen in film history.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

This fantasy film is directed by wonderfully kooky Tim Burton and written by Jane Goldman, based on the 2011 novel of the same name. The story surrounds a young boy named Jake who discovers a house full of children with supernatural powers run by Miss Peregrine. Soon, he must help protect their home from terrifying enemies called Hollowgasts. Filled with adventure and drama, this film is suitable for all ages.

Ghostbusters (2016)

Comedy-fantasy is always a great genre for people to be able to laugh at the paranormal. This remake is inspired by the 90’s films of the same name where paranormal enthusiasts Abby, Erin, Jillian, and Patty set out to capture ghosts when they realize that someone is attempting to cause an apocalypse by summoning ghosts in the busy city of New York. This is directed by Paul Feig, the same as The School for Good and Evil, and he enjoys working with female protagonists, and stories with female lead friendships, so this film is a great one if that’s what you’re looking for.

Stardust (2007)

A personal favorite of mine featuring a young Daredevil, Superman, and Robert DeNiro dancing around in a feather boa. With a star-studded cast, this comedy fantasy is filled with drama, romance, and magic and is one not to be missed.

Peter Pan (2003)

A great adventure film for all the family. Based on the book of the same name, in the early 1900s in London, the Darling siblings receive a visit from Peter Pan, who transports them to Never Never Land to help in a fight against the evil Captain Hook. This film may have had a few re-makes now, including the popular Disney animation, but this film has something special about it with its acting, set design, and costume design.

Golden Compass (2007)

I think this film deserves more credit than it gets. It’s a great watch, which will speak to your imagination. The story surrounds Lyra Belacqua, a young orphan who journeys to the far North, accompanied by Gyptians and an armored bear. She is on a mission to rescue her best friend and other kidnapped children. Aimed more toward young adults, this film can be enjoyed by all audiences.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (2010)

Whilst there is a new version of this film in production now, these films always hold a special place in my heart as not many are done surrounding the Gods of Olympia. Percy, who has dyslexia, is surprised to discover that he is a demigod. When he is accused of stealing Zeus’s lightning bolt, he sets off to find the bolt and settle the fight between the gods. A fun, action-filled fantasy drama where we see teens on a journey of self-discovery. One for the whole family. This series is based on the fantasy novels written by Rick Riordan, so if you really enjoy this film, you can delve into the novels.

Mirror Mirror (2012)

Inspired by the familiar tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, this story follows when Snow White’s evil stepmother takes over her kingdom and banishes her to the woods, she is forced to team up with a group of seven unruly dwarfs to take back what is rightfully hers. Action-packed, with a famous cast, and magic, this fantasy film is well worth adding to your list.

The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)

This is one for younger audiences, but nonetheless still a film that sparks the imagination and transports audiences into a world of magic. Twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace move into Spiderwick Estate with their mother and sister. Once there, they find themselves surrounded by magical creatures.

The Brothers Grimm (2005)

This is one of the films that made me fall in love with magic and fantasy and is one that everyone should see at least once in their lifetime. Brothers Jake and Will Grimm, who cheat people with tales of enchanted creatures and exorcisms, are put to the test when they encounter a real magical curse and must kill the evil queen to end it. The acting is to a high standard, there is dark and light comedy, and it’s filled with magic.
