Netflix reality series Dubai Bling was released on October 27th, 2022 – this is our official review of season 1.
What is life like in the UAE? Glamorous, gorgeous, filled with drama and diamonds? Well, in this Netflix reality series, we get a glimpse into the lives of ten millionaires living, working, and partying in Dubai. Over eight episodes lasting just under one hour each, the millionaires are followed in their daily lives against the backdrop of luxury cars, fashion shows, and exotic seaside resorts, showcasing everything the exuberant city has to offer. Lavish parties, stunning skylines, and jaw-dropping fashion are their norm.
Dubai Bling features notable names from the real estate and entertainment scene as well as socialites and influencers on the show. The featured cast hail from multiple countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Kuwait, Iraq, India, and Australia. Some of the cast include Farhana Bodi, Kris Fade, DJ Bliss, Ebraheem Al Samadi, Zeina Khoury, Lojain Omran, Safa Siddiqui, and Loujain Adadah. Each one of them is looking for something, whether that’s image, power, money, or love.
There’s no denying that audiences do like to indulge in watching other people’s lives — usually a life that’s different from their own. It’s fascinating how we get so emotionally involved in the lives of people we don’t know, but this has its positives. While we might get very envious of their possessions and their parties, these shows usually come filled with a lot of drama we can poke fun at.
This series isn’t any different. There is high drama, with fuelled arguments, tears, confrontations, so much sass, and some result in catfights. Money certainly does build confidence and ego, and I was surprised at the fights on how that money has been made. Suggesting if it’s through sponsors, it’s not real, it’s fake. There is a strong work ethic in earning your wealth in this series. Fashion is a big aspect as well. From their dresses to their diamonds, everyone is nosy and judges one another. There are also some lovely, fun moments, like an impromptu proposal, first dates, and birthday month celebrations that last the entire month.
We’re given interviews with each millionaire, who discuss their journey and life in Dubai, and why they love it so much. There’s dramatic rock music used over slow-motion shots, throughout which is so wonderfully dramatic, you can really focus on the wealth around them. Their cars, their clothes, the location. There are heartfelt moments when they discuss family, tragedy, and loss, and then some things you can’t take seriously, such as your house is too small for all your designer clothes. First-world problems are still problems, I guess.
Even though it has a very similar format to series in the same genre, it’s easy to watch, and in a few episodes, I was hooked and couldn’t stop watching.
The series is worth a watch if this is your genre if you like watching how the other half live, and also if you’re wanting to know what life can be like in UAE. While this series showcases Dubai as the city of opportunities and wealth, and everyone seems to be living their best life, and I did enjoy watching it, I still found it yet another show-off show with no real educational value; it’s modern trash TV. Trash TV with diamonds.
