It’s intriguing because of the extent he went to with his lover Solange and how he chose to reflect on all of this through a memoir. It’s odd to see such a dark, personal life being out in the open the way that they decided to do it in this series. For a brilliant male bookstore manager Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) who crosses paths with an aspiring female writer, the question of, “What would you do for love?” is put to the test. A charming yet awkward crush becomes something even more sinister when the writer becomes the manager’s obsession. He stalks her by using social media and the internet, he uses every tool at his disposal to become close to her. He takes it incredibly far and it’s almost necessary to watch just so women can be warned of this kind of behavior.
Sharp Objects (2018)
Camille Preaker (Amy Adams) returns to her small hometown to investigate mysterious, unsolved crimes in Sharp Objects. Two girls are missing, one of whom was found dead and presumed murdered. As she searches for clues, Camille reunites with her estranged family, which rekindles traumatic childhood memories, including the death of her younger sister. Piecing together a psychological puzzle from her past, Camille begins to identify with the young victims a bit too closely. The past comes back to haunt Camille and that’s why she can assemble the sinister pieces in the case of the missing girls. It’s an uncomfortable watch because of how dark of a place the characters go to.
Mindhunter (2017)
This series focuses on the development by two men, two agents, of a new criminal field and does so through storylines of visiting the sociopathic mind. Mindhunter is based on the 1996 book by former special agents John Douglas and Mark Olshaker. What is shown in this series is not for the faint of heart because it has actual situations that have happened in the past. These true stories are scary to watch but interesting at the same time because there are people with this mindset out there.
Mr. Robot (2015)
Mr. Robot follows Elliot, a young programmer who works as a cyber-security engineer by day and as a vigilante hacker by night. Elliot finds himself at a crossroads when the mysterious leader of an underground hacker group recruits him to destroy the firm he is paid to protect. This series explores how people change to fit a narrative and how that affects who they are. Their identity is challenged and it’s interesting to see how far they’re willing to go.
