Who are the Cast and Characters in From Scratch? In anticipation of the romance drama series, we break down the cast and characters. This article contains spoilers.

One of the strengths of the Netflix series From Scratch is the deep bench of talented actors. Let’s look at the characters and the strong work of the cast. Enjoy!

From Scratch – who are the cast and characters?

Zoe Saldaña as Amy

The “Sci-Fi” queen, Zoe Saldaña, plays Amy, a law student who took a break to study art for six weeks in the lovely city of Florence. While there, she meets the charming chef, Lino. The role of Amy is a slight departure for the Avatar and Star Trek star, who unsurprisingly has not starred in any romantic dramas or comedies. Her role here covered various emotions and situations over the eight episodes. After returning from Florence, Amy does not go back to law school and takes a job at an art gallery. She marries Lino, who shortly after is diagnosed with cancer. After a stressful treatment, Lino is free of the disease and adopts a beautiful baby girl named Idalia. When Lino’s cancer remerges seven years later, he wishes to return his ashes to his family home in Sicily.

Eugenio Mastrandrea as Lino

The relative newcomer Eugenie Masteandrea (La fuggitivia) plays Lino, a chef in Florence who is a regular at the bar Amy works at to lay for art school. They happen to run into each other when Amy leaves her place of business. They start as friends, as Lino offers to walk her home at night. (He charmingly tells Amy it would be his “honor” to accompany her home). He also “buys” her a bike with a wicked basket. Why? So she will not have to walk and cooks an eight-course dinner at the restaurant.

Their steamy glances from across the aisle could cook the food. After standing out all night in the rain outside her apartment building, they fall in love. Amy proposes to Lino in the States, and they adopt a child after beating cancer. Unfortunately, the disease returns seven years later. Lino passes away at the end of the series.

Danielle Deadwyler as Zora

Danielle Deadwyler is having quite a year. She was electric as Cuffee in Netflix’s streaming hit, The Harder They Fall. Deadwyler stars in one of the more emotionally devastating movies in some time, Till, currently in theaters. And now she has the prime role of Zora, the blunt and protective big sister of Saldaña’s Amy. Zora has been her little sister’s protector since they were kids, and their mother left. Zora is selfless, allowing both to live in her apartment and understanding as they leave her wedding to adopt a child. In Lino’s final scenes, he asks Zora to look over his family and treat Idalia as her own child.

Keith David as Hershel

Actor Keith David (Nope, Clockers) plays Hershel, Amy’s academic yet one-gallon cowboy hat and bog belt buckle-wearing resident of Texas. The veteran actor, with over 300 film and television credits, is responsible for a large amount of the comic relief in From Scratch. At first, he is your typical tyrant father-in-law type who looks down upon Lino’s profession and thinks his daughter is throwing her future away for an art career. As the show progresses, Hershel gains more respect and love for Lino and becomes a surrogate father for the young man.

Kellita Smith as Lynn

The Bernie Mac Show‘s Kellita Smith plays Lynn, the biological mother of Amy and Zora. She is divorced from their father, Hershel, and left her children when they were children to find herself. Lynn is a free spirit who has her line of holistic beauty care and health products. She moves to Los Angeles to be closer to her daughter and tends to take over any room she walks into, to the ire of her daughters. As the series progresses, Lynn shows more humility as she accepts that she is not there for her children but tries to make up for the lost time.

Judith Scott as Maxine

The veteran character actor Judith Scott (Dexter, All-American) plays the stepmother to Amy and Zora. Hershell married Maxine and became the surrogate mother to his children, something that may have been lost upon Amy. How? Maxine was never given the respect she deserved for being the mother figure in their lives, and Amy does not think about asking her to walk her down the aisle with Hershel. Her father only brings it up when his ex-wife, Lynn, insists that Amy allow her to walk down the aisle with her. Lynn and Maxine have jealousy and animosity for most of the series, but Lynn slowly begins to show her the respect she deserves.

Lucia Sardo as Filomena

Lucia Sardo plays Lino’s mother, Filomena, a repressed wife who was not allowed to attend her son’s wedding because, as her husband Giacomo puts it, he shamed their family. The accomplished Italian actor, writer, and director offer Amy the family property and home in Sicily after Lino’s death because it should go to the oldest son’s family. But really, she is trying to give Amy and her granddaughter a reason to come back and visit as often as possible.

Paride Benassai as Giacomo

Paride Benassai (Baaria) plays Lino’s estranged father, Giacomo. The Sicilian tomato farmer refused to go to his son’s wedding and even forbade his wife and daughter from going. What is his issue with Lino? He left the family business to pursue a career in the culinary arts. But also, marrying an American woman did not settle well with him either. Eventually, they mend fences when Giacomo and Filomena visit him while receiving treatment for cancer.
