Following on from the release of the Netflix series The Playlist, we list 5 series like The Playlist that you absolutely must watch.

The Playlist is quite a unique show from Netflix, as it is based on the development of the rise of Spotify. It has a unique spin to it. As Netflix puts it, the show will tell the story of an aspiring entrepreneur, Daniel Ek, who finds an opportunity in the battle between the music industries’ heavy hitters and music piracy. Ek sees a solution never seen before in the turbulent music industry. He then decided to build a free and legalized music streaming service along with his business partner, Martin Lorentzon. Little did he know that service would “revolutionize” the global music industry and face unforeseen challenges along with its foundations.

Released on the 13th of October 2022, with just six episodes, you may have already watched it. Or it may have even slipped under your radar, as it did for me. Either way, if you’re looking for something similar to watch, we have you covered.

5 series like The Playlist you must watch

The Social Network (2010)

The only film on the list. Like The Playlist, The Social Network is based on the origins of one of the biggest technologies of the current world. The Social Network follows the story of Facebook and how it came to be the everyday app we use today. From Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, and Jesse Eisenberg starring, it also had a stellar cast. And as it was critically acclaimed, many still view it highly today. If, by some fluke, you haven’t seen the show, go watch it!

Succession (2018)

On paper, the shows don’t seem like a fit. However, it’s the fact that both shows focus on a huge company that brings them together. With ambitious characters, constant setbacks, and a business vibe in each episode, Succession may prove to be the next show to dive into after The Playlist.

The IT Crowd (2006)

A bit of a throwback now. Airing in the 2000s, The IT Crowd may be a nostalgic watch for many. With a group of “geeky” friends, they’re always on a mission for the next big thing. A little like the characters in The Playlist! Following a group of IT technicians, it focused on the industry that they all work within. Unlike many of the other shows within this list, this show was very funny. And considering it was labeled as a comedy, that’s a relief.

Vinyl (2016)

Although The Playlist doesn’t focus much on the actual music, the fact it’s based on Spotify naturally brings a music tone to the show. That’s why Vinyl is the perfect show to watch after The Playlist. A period drama, as it’s set in the 70s.

The Deuce (2017)

Once again, like The Playlist, this is based on the rise of an industry many are aware of. However, not many shows cover porn very well. The Deuce was real, dark, horrifying, and emotional as it showed a variety of people who are impacted by the world of porn. There were shocking deaths, brilliant characters, and the rise of some characters who were always destined to fail.
