Notre-Dame follows the story of the night of April 15th, 2019, in the Notre Dame Cathedral alongside firefighters and the impact that it had on different characters across France. There are many series that have been based on a true story and how those moments can affect everyone around the area.

In doing so, there are perspectives from groups of people that have had their own lives altered by this one moment. This series shows the before, during, and aftermath of the situation and what the Cathedral meant to many people in the country. It was a moment that shocked many around the world as Notre Dame Cathedral has been an important landmark in France for decades. It was unexpected and difficult to see something so beautiful that many have visited be completely destroyed.

French drama series have been added to Netflix over the years and they have been compelling. It’s interesting to see the lengths people go to in order to get something done.


Lupin (2021)

A retelling of the classic French story about Arsène Lupin, the world-famous gentleman thief and master of disguise. This is one of the most notable series on Netflix because it surprised viewers when it started streaming. Lupin is about the excitement of the heist and it’s fun to know that this could be a real story as well.


The Forest (2017) 

When a teenage girl disappears from a village near the Ardennes Forest, local police and a concerned teacher begin to uncover a web of unsettling secrets. This is another French drama on Netflix that really gets the heart pumping. The Forest is one of the most talked about series on Netflix, and the web of secrets keeps the viewer guessing until the end.


The Great (2020)

A genre-bending, anti-historical ride through 18th-century Russia following the wildly comedic rise of Catherine the Nothing to Catherine the Great. The Great is streaming on Amazon Prime and definitely takes liberties in exploring Catherine the Great’s rise to power. The historical drama helps viewers understand who she truly was.


The Returned (2012)

In a small Alpine village, a group of men, women, and children are in a state of confusion as they try to return to their homes after years of being away. What they don’t know is that no one is expecting their arrival because they have been dead for several years. Upon returning, they realize that their friends and family have moved on to the next stages of their lives since the now-returning souls passed on. Coinciding with their reappearance is a series of murders that bears a chilling resemblance to those of serial killers from the past. This is another French drama series that will impress you with its supernatural story and interesting characters. Even though it’s not based on true events, it’s a French series worth watching.


The Spanish Princess (2019)

The Spanish Princess returns viewers to the world of Tudor royal court intrigue, continuing the story from the Starz miniseries The White Queen and the limited series The White Princess. It is told from the perspective of the women, but it also highlights the lives of people of colour who were living and working in 16th-century London. Teenage Catherine of Aragorn is promised to marry the English Prince Arthur. Then, he dies suddenly and the throne seems lost until she sets her sights o the new heir.


The Bureau (2015)

This French spy thriller, The Bureau, is based on real accounts and inspired by contemporary events. It examines the daily lives and missions of members of the country’s external security service. It focuses on Intelligence officer Guillaume Debailly, who is mysteriously recalled to Paris after spending six years undercover in Syria. As he tries to reconnect with his daughter, ex-wife, and colleagues, Debailly risks everything by resuming contact with his married lover, Nadia, who might have secrets of her own that jeopardize the agent.


Versailles (2015) 

It’s 1667, and 28-year-old King Louis XIV has finally taken over sole command of France. When he commissions Versailles, Europe’s most beautiful palace, the nobles seek entry into the lavish residence, which they do not realize is meant to imprison and control them. Among the ruler’s prime targets is the younger brother, Monsieur. It shows the struggles in daily life at Versailles. Versailles is another location that is very important to the French people so this series is a great exploration of King Louis XIV’s reign.


The Empress (2022)

When rebellious Elisabeth falls for Emperor Franz and becomes his unlikely bride, she enters a world of tensions and intrigue at the Viennese court. The historical drama on Netflix, The Empress, has taken the streamer by storm. Many viewers tuned in to see this romantic tale unfold. These historical dramas may seem recycled by they are still enjoyable.


Air Crash Investigation (2003)

The original title of this series was called Mayday when it first started. It is a dramatized reconstruction of real-life air disasters, along with interviews with aviation experts and eyewitnesses. This is as real as any series gets, and it highlights real-life air disasters in detail. Much like the horrible fire at Notre-Dame, it is a dramatized reconstruction of the situations people have been faced with.
