Summary

What an episode. My favorite of the season so far. It brought the tragic pieces of Jax’s childhood together and ended on a fantastic and juicy cliffhanger. If you’re anything like me, you won’t be able to wait for the season finale.

We recap the Hulu series Reasonable Doubt season 1, episode 8, “Song Cry,” which contains spoilers.

In a lot of shows, the penultimate episodes always feature something dramatic. And due to the soapy nature of this show, I reckon that something huge will go down. Want to find out if I’m right? Read the below recap.

Reasonable Doubt season 1, episode 8 recap

The show starts with another flashback. This time, Jax (Emayatzy Corinealdi) is a lot younger, and we see how her relationship used to be with her Mom and Paul. As she gives Paul a hug, she sexually harasses her. And now, no one watching will question Jax for the way she behaves around Paul. Cutting to the present timeline, Jax visits her Mom, who is beside Paul at the hospital. Lewis is also there, and he tells Jax’s Mom he will stay with her.

Anyways, Jax doesn’t have time for Paul. Instead, she jumps straight into the trial. She wants to know who the fingerprints belong to. Brayden (Sean Patrick Thomas) is livid as he “watches Todd steal the company from him on national TV” and subtly accuses him of committing the murder. With Brayden becoming more stressed by the second, Jax forces him to take part in a mock questioning. As one might expect, it doesn’t land well for Brayden. Jax and Lewis get their wires crossed, and neither of them is there to pick up their children. After their son scolds them both, Lewis tells Jax that he is filing for divorce. It stuns Jax. That is until Lewis reveals he knows all about her boyfriend.

In a series of further flashbacks, it shows that Paul had sexually harassed her several times. In the present timeline, Jax breaks down and finally tells one of her friends about what Paul did, the first person she has ever told. As she tells her friend, she doesn’t want to tell Lewis as that means their children would lose their grandparents. That same friend then slips up and reveals that they told Lewis that Jax had never seemed happier. As a result, Jax snaps at her friend. However, that friend refuses to take the cr*p, and she leaves Jax on her own.

Whilst Jax is hoping that Sarah will help Brayden on trial, Jax is not against pinning the murder of her. As Brayden is her client, and Sarah isn’t, Jax seemingly doesn’t care. When Sarah is quizzed on the stand, and it doesn’t go in Brayden’s favour, Jax does as she promised. She throws Sarah under the bus. Afterwards, Sarah is naturally angry over what Jax and Brayden have done. Sarah even claims that Brayden probably raped Kaleesha, and now she is starting to think he killed her.

Reasonable Doubt season 1, episode 8 ending

Shortly afterwards, Jax manages to make Theo look extremely guilty. When Jax goes to comfort Brayden, he stupidly makes a move on her. Afterwards, the show cuts to a flashback of Paul trying to do the same thing to Jax as she sleeps. Damon goes to Jax’s place and spots her with another man. However, the man is only there to get a job reference. Has that moment just proven that Damon is guilty of the crime he was convicted of?

Jax calls Lewis and tells him that she doesn’t want a divorce. Instead, she wants to figure out how they can be together. Later that night, she meets with Damon. He excuses his behaviour by claiming that it’s because her behaviour was driving him crazy and because he is in love with her. But Jax tells him that he doesn’t deserve her. In a flashback, it is shown that Jax’s Mom states that it was a mistake for Paul to get into bed with Jax. Even when Jax tells her Mom that she isn’t going anywhere, her Mom is too caught up on Paul.

After Jax clears her schedule, she visits Paul in the hospital. Jax asks Paul if he ever thinks about what he did to her when she was 16. He calls it the biggest mistake of his life and tries to make excuses for it by claiming he was blackout drunk. When Jax asks him about all of the other times, he remarks that it might be her truth, but it isn’t his truth. She then tells him that if he ever comes near her children, she will fuc*king kill him. As she leaves and he dies, Jax stands outside, seemingly in shock over her behaviour. But that’s not the case. Jax has just realised who killed Kaleesha!
