We have provided a list of the Upcoming Star Wars Shows and Movies in 2023 and Beyond. We look forward in this franchise and determine what to expect.
Back in 2012, Disney made the decision to acquire LucasFilm. Shortly after, a Star Wars ride was built at Disney called Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. This came four years after Disney bought Marvel. It felt as if Disney was collecting Infinity Stones to gain more power in the film space. After the prequel trilogy came out for Star Wars, it seemed like the Skywalker story had come to an end and wrapped in a neat little bow. But for Disney, there was much more to explore in the galaxy.
In 2015 Star Wars: A Force Awakens was released, and the feeling of watching a new Star Wars film in theatres was unmatched. It could have been the first time many Star Wars fans watched it on the big screen, so in that case, it was something special.
The Skywalker Saga continued with The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker (even if it didn’t end on a good note for some fans), but more importantly, the Star Wars franchise expanded even further. Fans were able to get characters like Cassian Andor and Jyn Erso in Rogue One, and see what happens when building the Death Star.
Then Disney introduced their streaming service Disney Plus and fans got a brand new bounty hunter in Din Djarin with The Mandalorian thanks to Jon Favreau. The galaxy will forever be expanding because of the streaming service, and they are able to produce really strong television with a cinematic feel.
The Skywalker Saga may be over, but there are plenty of stories left to be discovered in the franchise. If you’re a diehard Star Wars fan, series like Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fett, and Andor are going to be super important to many. It’s nice to see all of these projects providing work for so many people in the industry, but it can also be exhausting knowing that we’re getting similar stories. Just how inventive can these Star Wars stories be?
Looking at the upcoming slate shows like The Bad Batch, Andor, The Mandalorian, and Star Wars: Visions are exciting additions because fans have really enjoyed how different they are. There are shows and films on this list that may feel a bit repetitive or are completely necessary for pushing the universe into a new direction. It’s hard to know what works in Star Wars because they’re all fairly the same story. It just comes down to the characters and if they’re compelling enough to last the season.
What fans should be excited about are the animated series doing some different things globally with how to design the characters within the shows. And, of course, Ahsoka is probably the most anticipated project out of all of them on this list. There are more television series for Disney Plus confirmed than actual films, and, in all honesty, television series are the way to go for Star Wars. We get to stay with the new characters a bit more, and there can be multiple reasons that can take them anywhere. It’s considered the safer bet because the box office numbers can sometimes be the downfall when a movie of this caliber comes out and it doesn’t meet expectations.
A Star Wars film not having anything to do with the Skywalker Saga is something tricky to bring to the big screen, so that script has to be very strong in order for anything to start production. The one series on this list that should go ahead is the Lando series because Donald Glover was fantastic in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and that movie is incredibly underrated as well. There are some series that should have gotten the green light a while back and should have come out already, but other projects are more important and are in demand.
Upcoming Star Wars Shows and Movies in 2023 and Beyond
Okay, here is the schedule of the upcoming Star Wars shows and movies in 2023 and beyond.
Last updated: November 10th, 2022.
The Bad Batch Season 2 (January 4th, 2023)
The Bad Batch will be working with Gungi but also searching for new allies. Commander Cody will also be returning after Order 66. The clones, Echo, in particular, have switched from trying to protect Omega as a civilian and have been training her as part of the team.
The Mandalorian Season 3 (March 2023)
Season three will follow the events of The Book of Boba Fett. Grogu had to choose between becoming a Jedi or staying with Mando, and he chose the latter.
Star Wars: Visions – Volume 2 (Spring 2023)
Star Wars: Visions stretches beyond any one form of animation and serves as a broader framework for celebratory expressions of Star Wars storytelling. Volume 2 will showcase that potential as the shorts go on a global tour, celebrating the incredible animation happening across countries and cultures through the mythos of Star Wars.
Young Jedi Adventures Animated TV Series (Spring 2023)
This is set during The High Republic era and will follow a group of Younglings as they embark on missions and ultimately learn the valuable skills needed to become Jedi: compassion, self-discipline, teamwork, patience, and friendship.
The Acolyte (Summer 2023)
The Acolyte is a mystery thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.
Skeleton Crew (2023)
In this story, a group of kids, about 10 years old, from a tiny little planet accidentally get lost in the Star Wars galaxy. It’s the story of their journey trying to find their way home. It will cover adult themes and won’t necessarily be geared toward children. Instead of experiencing the force, these young children will venture out on their own, seeking help from new characters in order to get home.
This series will be set after the fall of the Empire, as Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy. There is a possibility that the series will follow Ahsoka in the hunt for Ezra and Thrawn.
Andor Season 2 (TBD)
Tony Gilroy mentioned that there is a possibility of including Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO at some point in the series and that season two will also be 12 episodes in length. Season two will most likely take Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) into Rogue One.
Rangers of the New Republic (In development)
This series will be set within the timeline of The Mandalorian. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni will intersect with future stories and culminate into a climactic story event.
Lando (In development)
Everyone’s favorite scoundrel Lando Calrissian will return in a brand-new event series for Disney Plus. There is no official premise for the series yet, but Donald Glover would be more than happy to return to the role. If this series does go ahead, there could be a possibility of Alden Ehrenreich returning as Han Solo for his own series with Lando. The film itself was under-appreciated, but if Lando is a hit, it could be a possibility.
A Droid Story (In development)
LucasFilm will continue to make new stories that intersect animation and visual effects to explore new opportunities. This epic journey will introduce us to a new hero, guided by the legendary duo R2-D2 and C-3PO.
Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie (In development)
The plot is unknown at the moment, but Taika Waititi does want to explore other characters in the galaxy. He does not want anything to do with Skywalkers, and he wants to have fun with this movie.
The series and films on this list are all very exciting and will be coming out in 2023 and beyond. It’s a very loaded year, and there’s no doubt that Disney has plenty of other tricks up their sleeves.
Films are going to be a bit trickier to produce because of scheduling and certain directors signing on to tackle such a big project like this. The projects that are still in development need writers to understand where the universe is heading in order for all of these wonderful stories to mesh perfectly together.
The wonderful thing about Disney is that they are trying absolutely everything when it comes to their streaming services and the franchise they want to amplify the most.
Star Wars fans have so much lore in their franchise that it’s hard to get to every section of the galaxy, but Disney is more than happy to take them on this journey on their streaming service. It’s almost as if no stone will go unturned in this franchise, and that is definitely a good thing.
There will be opportunities for filmmakers to enjoy the ride in making a series or a movie for Disney. For the streaming service, there is an opportunity to let fans watch new projects however they please, and they will stay on there for a long time.
The Star Wars franchise isn’t as interconnected as other universes, and that is working to their benefit. There are characters that can be linked to other stories but it’s not necessary to watch one project in order to watch another. It’s a bit more laid back and leisurely than the Marvel universe, and that’s why Disney is working incredibly well to balance their storytelling for their platform.
We will keep this list of Upcoming Star Wars Shows and Movies in 2023 and Beyond updated throughout 2023, so keep it bookmarked.
