Will there be a season 2 The Calling?

This article discusses the potential of The Calling Season 2 and its renewed or canceled status.

David E. Kelley’s newest cop drama, The Calling, just premiered as a binge-able on Peacock. Set in New York City, the series’s narrative is centered on Detective Avraham “Avi” Avraham (Jeff Wilbusch), an Orthodox Jew whose faith is as important to him as getting to the truth in the cases he’s investigating. What sets The Calling apart from other cop dramas is its unique main character and his compassionate approach to the gruesomeness he encounters on the job. Avi is not jaded, not violent, or corrupt. He has a way of getting suspects to confess their deepest darkest secrets. Based on a successful series of crime novels, the show challenges the hero cop trope and brings a new kind of hero to our screens. Supportive cast members include Juliana Canfield, Karen Robinson, Michael Mosley, Chris Sullivan, and Constance Zimmer.

In addition to David E. Kelley (who brought us television gems like Ally McBealNine Perfect Strangers, and Big Little Lies), The Calling’s production crew includes Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson and Hanz Zimmer, who contributed the soundtrack. With so much star power behind it, it’s hard to imagine the series failing. However, audiences and critics alike offered a mixed reception. Has The Calling done enough to warrant a second installment?

Will there be a season 2 of the Peacock series The Calling? Renewed or canceled status

Status: not renewed yet.

As of the time of writing, Peacock has yet to confirm a second installment of the crime drama. The series was originally ordered back in October 2021 as an eight-episode adaptation of The Missing File and A Possibility of Violence, the first two novels in the Avraham book series by Israeli crime author Dror A. Mishani. There are four books in the series, so depending on how the show’s received, we are potentially looking at at least one more season ahead. It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for the series to eventually move beyond the source material if the streaming network decides to order more seasons.

The show’s current IMDb score of 6.6/10 suggests it’s been mostly positively received by audiences. It’s only just been released though, so that score might change in the coming weeks. Critical reviews of the series were mixed, with the show holding a ranking of 30% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, The Calling’s audience score is a lot more favorable.

While there’s been no official talk of a potential second season, ending the series on a cliffhanger is a clear indication David E. Kelley is planning to adapt more of the Avraham books to the small screen. Executive producer, Matthew Tinker, did hint in an interview with Digital Trends about the team’s hope for a second installment, “What’s going to keep me excited to be a part of this show and what’s going to keep audiences excited beyond the first season is the layers to Jeff and to Avi.” Hopefully, Peacock agrees to renew this breath of fresh air to the police procedural drama.
