Netflix loves a good docu-series, and this one looks like a doozy. In this four-part original, director Andrew Renzi explores the cola wars of the mid-nineties, as Pepsi launched an advertisement campaign like no other, where they boldly state that if you are to collect seven million points, you can land yourself a Harrier Jet. One college student decides to take them up on the offer. Sounds like the perfect hook, a real David and Goliath story about corporate greed and the determination of one individual.
Pepsi, Where’s My Jet? plot synopsis
Here is the plot synopsis:
To battle Coke, who dominated the cola market in the nineties, Pepsi launch their biggest marketing campaign yet, titled Pepsi Stuff. In the advertisement they state that if you buy enough of their products, you could earn points to purchase sun glasses, leather jackets or even a fighter jet. One plucky college student watched this ad and saw the unbelievable opportunity laid out before him, he wanted that jet. Introducing John Leonard, who accepts the challenge wholeheartedly and thus plans his hare-brained scheme to get his mitts on the most insane of prizes. John brings in his mountaineering buddy Todd Hoffman to help with the daunting challenge, and together they take on the almighty force of PepsiCo and corporate America.
Our opinion of the premise
This sounds like an intriguing concept, one that I am sure will be full of frustrating injustice and a life-affirming underdog spirit. I’m a huge fan of these sorts of docu-series, where a seemingly ordinary individual takes on a large company or a cultural movement in the fight for overall justice. The fact that this is a four-part series as well is encouraging, because it means that the show doesn’t have time to outstay its welcome and can focus on the more entertaining aspects of the narrative, over a shorter period of time.

Judging from the trailer, this looks like a lot of fun. The series appears to have a quirky, playful tone to it, with striking visuals and a nostalgic nineties soundtrack thrown in for good measure. The larger-than-life players involved in this show seem to be split into villain and hero stereotypes, with the interview segments hinting at a real fight between the determined, happy-go-lucky underdogs and aggressive, wealthy opposition. This elaborate scheme and the inspirational David versus Goliath court battle that followed will surely make for perfect binge material this November.
