Summary

Two hilarious, if very similar, setups draw out the most laughs in another solid instalment. This might be the funniest episode yet from the third season. Although the neurotic Poppy is starting to grate and Ian Grimm’s character is definitely taking a backseat this year.

We recap the Apple TV+ series Mythic Quest season 3, episode 4, “The Two Joes,” which contains spoilers.

By introducing the concept of a film adaptation into the series, it cleverly opens up the narrative for endless possibilities. In “The Two Joes”, a famous Hollywood actor wishes to meet with David (David Hornsby) to discuss a leading role in the movie, which leads to a hilarious setup. While David schmoozes with the stars, Ian (Rob McElhenney) and Dana (Imani Hakim) continue to bond and janitor Brad (Danny Pudi) meddles even further in the business.

Mythic Quest season 3, episode 4 recap

Poppy finishes her Hera prototype and asks Dana to do the honors of testing it out for her, to find all the bugs and glitches. Dana is happy to give her opinions on the game but doesn’t want to be known as a games tester anymore. She’s busy today anyway, with Ian speaking at her class. This entire conversation plays out with Ian communicating with Dana through an earpiece. The scene ends with Poppy and Ian arguing as usual and Poppy warning Dana about Ian’s relentless, demanding nature.

Jo organizes a meeting between David and actor Joe Manganiello (True Blood) for this afternoon. David is excited, but also nervous about this prospect, sweating profusely at the thought of meeting a famous person. Jo isn’t faring any better and bites her own tongue until it bleeds. He asks her to do some research on the actor in preparation for their meeting.

Brad’s NFTs plan has backfired badly and now Carol regrets ever putting any faith in the ex-felon. She decides to have a day off and leaves after ranting at Rachel. Brad admits his idea sucked, leading to Rachel chipping in with her own opinions. This unlikely pairing goes back to poor Phil with Rachel’s new ideas.

David is running late for his meeting and is stuck in traffic. He phones Jo, who is waiting at the restaurant and asks for an update. The actor, surprisingly, shows up early and starts chatting with Jo. David decides to tell Jo exactly what to say through the earpiece, which of course is a setup that leads to some great comedy moments. Jo is socially awkward at the best of times, but her gawkiness only adds to the humor here. Joe says how much he loves Mythic Quest and she calls him a nerd.

Phil is tired of Brad barking orders at him and calls David to sort this all out. David has Jo on the line via his business phone and Phil calling via his personal one. As you’d expect, these conversations get mixed up. Although Brad makes it a lot trickier when he phones him too. Joe pitches his own ideas to Jo, Brad asks for permission to make changes to the game and Phil wants clarification on Brad’s involvement. Jo’s awkwardness offends Joe and he asks if they actually want him on the project. David screams yes down the phone, which Brad interprets as confirmation to do whatever the hell he wants at the studio. It all plays out for the most laughs and is a highlight of the series so far.

Poppy asks for Mythic Quest’s testers to play her new game, while Ian and Dana bond over some more metaverse gameplay. He invites her to test out some state-of-the-art equipment and she cannot refuse. The duo seem to have similar thoughts and are freaked out by just how compatible they are together.

Mythic Quest season 3, episode 4 ending

Mythic Quest season 3, episode 4 ends with David finally making it to the meeting but finding Joe Manganiello has already left. Jo updates David on the meeting and explains how she had to make very intricate lies to keep him interested. Whatever the case, it worked and they have bagged the beefcake. David wants to celebrate but finds himself back in traffic almost straightaway – there’s no rest for the wicked.

Then Poppy returns to the gamers to see how her beloved project has gone down. The tester grunts say there are no bugs, and the programming is incredible. But they leave with one unfortunate criticism, the game is just no fun at all. Poor Poppy, is she going to have to swallow her pride and ask Ian for some help making Hera more enjoyable?
