Lacking a fully engaging narrative, this episode mostly succeeds in building some excitement for later episodes.
We recap the Netflix K-Drama series Behind Every Star season 1, episode 7, which contains spoilers.
Unfortunately, Behind Every Star didn’t hit the right notes in this installment. Lacking the kind of engaging narrative we’ve come to expect involving the celebrity guests, things felt a bit one-dimensional, and some more development of other plot points would’ve been far more appreciated. With that being said, the ending scenes were exciting, and at least it looks like the plot will be moving forward in an intriguing direction.
Behind Every Star season 1, episode 7 recap
After Tae-oh reflects on what marriage is supposed to mean through the warm words of two of his clients, he faces an unexpected phone call. So-hyun, the wife of the seemingly lovey-dovey pairing, is worried about misunderstandings that could be caused by a picture taken of her with a school friend but dismisses the idea of being honest with her husband in favor of believing nothing will come of the situation. Elsewhere, Je-in finds she dreamt of meeting Sang-uk at the office, Hyun-joo is officially assigned as Eun-gyul’s agent, and Hee-sun gets invited to a callback audition.
When Director Ma is told of his daughter’s task to look after Eun-gyul on set going forward, he gives his blessing. That, and he wishes to officially have this be the starting point of making things right, wanting to tell the other workers that Hyun-joo is his child. However, the rookie agent doesn’t think it’s the right time for such a bombshell to be dropped, so asks for the secret to be kept hidden for the time being. As a nugget, this scene also shows the President of Star Media walking alongside Kyung-ok.
Next, controversy arises. The photo So-hyun was worried about involving her embracing a friend has been uploaded (albeit deleted too), causing rumors to spread. “So let’s patch this up,” Director Ma says, wanting there to be complete honesty about the context of the picture so the promotions for Love Love Musical aren’t hindered. Then, Tae-oh tells his staff Kyung-ok is in contact with Star Media’s president and subsequently suggests for the sake of the company’s financial health everyone takes a temporary salary cut.
In the midst of the staff complaining about their inability to trust they would ever receive deferred wages should they agree to a pay cut, a disgruntled Jun-ho arrives. What follows is Director Ma needing to play mediator between the married couple, hoping to salvage their evidently unhappy relationship that both believe is based on enduring the other’s drawbacks. Thus, for the time being, So-hyun ends up being put under Jung-don’s care, the intention being that splitting the two parties up in their day-to-day life will help them in the long run.
As Jin-hyeok receives an offer to be a manager in a different company, Je-in gets irritated about the idea of needing to spend the night in her hometown for the sake of Ji-min’s filming schedule. Following that, we see Eun-gyul and Hyun-joo are beginning to bond as siblings when the former humorously practices his one line on his sister during their commute to work.
Continuing, Jin-hyeok starts to reject the errands he is usually tasked with and encourages the likes of Won-jae to do the same. “The agency won’t protect you forever,” he says, stunning the onlooking workers. Then, Jung-don nervously tries to stop So-hyun from being asked personal questions in an interview, though succeeds only in making things more awkward as the actor describes her “worn out” mental state. “I want to abandon everything,” she adds, making everything messier. Later, Jung-don speculates he was put with So-hyun because Director Ma knew she would cause trouble, and this is all part of a tactic to get rid of him as an agent.
After Je-in and returning hero Hae-jun (a dating app creator and business mogul) are commemorated in their hometown, we cut to Director Ma. Here, he is needing to deal with threats of being sued for breach of contract if Jun-ho doesn’t appear alongside So-hyun in promotional activities, and he also has to reassure Jung-don that he was only transferred to his new client because of his compassionate competency.
When Myung-ae keys the car of Star Media’s President, she confronts him over the building he put up using bribes. The experienced worker claims to have evidence of her grand declarations too, so warns Gi-bong to stay away from Method going forward, unable to be swayed by a prospective job offer at the shady agency. Elsewhere, Je-in decides she will try to win over Hae-jun to have him use his riches to invest in Method.
While Je-in gets to work on trying to convince Hae-jun of Method’s value as a company, Jun-ho arrives at Director Ma’s house claiming he needs space to reflect on his marriage. “My faith in So-hyun is shaken,” he states, disregarding the talk show he is meant to appear on, not caring that it will see him booted off Love Love Musical. Fortunately, though, Tae-oh manages to convince his client to fulfill his scheduled duties, even if it does take some underhanded threats of exposing secrets to do so.
Unfortunately, Hae-jun ends up arguing with one of the film crew over whether his car (and driver) can be used in Ji-min’s movie, so it looks like his potential investment in Method will be nixed. To make matters worse, the businessman runs over cables on his way out, leading to some electronics falling on Je-in. Meanwhile, Jung-don comforts Hee-sun about the fact she was left reciting lines all day without being cast and vows to pay more attention to her.
After Director Ma empathizes with So-hyun, telling her that holding back is important in a relationship while assuring her she can win back the trust of her husband, we watch the injured Je-in wake up. With a broken tooth, she’s in a bad state, one compounded by her parents’ extreme wishes for her to take the state exam, or marry a civil servant. Elsewhere, Jin-hyeok finds out he will not be getting the job at Shark Entertainment, so frantically swallows his resignation letter before it can be seen.
When visiting his wife, Director Ma is told to change his address and take his belongings. Tae-oh is naturally shocked, wondering how long he will need to “beg” for forgiveness for a mistake made 24 years ago that he will always be sorry for, but it turns out Eun-ha wants to talk about a different matter. She produces a picture of her husband comforting So-hyun, untrusting of what it could mean. So, Eun-ha subsequently requests a divorce.
The next day, Gi-bong meets with So-hyun, hoping he can get her to lose faith in Director Ma by revealing that Jun-ho keeps some of his finances a secret from his wife. As such, the couple ends up producing a tense appearance on their scheduled talk show, where they brand marriage “a series of lies and perpetual surprises.” In between filming, they bicker too, but they do manage to patch things up in due time, realizing how much they appreciate the other’s support which has helped them endure their hectic lives. This, in turn, makes the rest of the talk show run smoothly. Meanwhile, Hee-sun confesses to liking Jung-don, though she is afforded no response.
Behind Every Star season 1, episode 7 ending
To his surprise, Director Ma is told by the now-content Jun-ho and So-hyun that they will be moving agencies. It’s because they wish for a “fresh start,” one that will be at Star Media instead of Method. Things get worse for Tae-oh too, as when he arrives back at the office, he discovers that the “savior” of the company he wished to own is now Hae-jun, who has officially taken over as President. Taking this all in, Director Ma collapses, bringing an end to the episode.
