We discuss the Netflix series First Love including the release date, time, plot synopsis, cast, and trailer.
Are you looking forward to something new on Netflix? Well, wait no more! First Love is a brand-new Japanese romantic drama that looks like it is ready to grab all of your tears. Inspired by two songs by Hikaru Utada, released 19 years apart, the new series will take us into the lives of Noguchi Yae and Namiki Harumachi as they grapple with falling in love for the first time, and meeting back again many years later.
This is definitely not the typical Japanese content on Netflix — instead of a new anime series or film, this is actually live-action, something not that usual for a streaming service that is doubling down on anime content more than any other out there. That, of course, is just part of their strategy to win over a specific demographic and set some boundaries during the current streaming wars.

Netflix series First Love plot synopsis
Here is the official plot synopsis
“A cross-generational love story inspired by First Love (1999) and Hatsukoi (2018), two seminal songs by Hikaru Utada. Two teenagers fall in love for the first time in the late 90s; two decades later, one is about to get engaged, while the other is divorced with a teenage son who’s falling in love for the first time.”
Our opinion of the premise
The premise is absolutely beautiful, and the trailer also promises a rollercoaster of emotions. I am personally very much looking forward to it, as it looks to be the romantic tale I’ve been looking forward to for a while, but it definitely looks like it will have some tearful moments along the way. And that is fine, as they pretty much spell it out on the poster and all over the trailer.
It also seems like a very personal show, especially given that it was all written and directed by one person, Yuri Kanchiku. Being inspired by two songs as opposed to a book or even another movie/show is also quite refreshing, and I’m looking forward to seeing what that will bring to the table.
First Love release date
The series will be released on Netflix on Thursday, November 24th, 2022. All 10 episodes will be streaming at once.
