Is the Netflix movie Qala based on a true story? We delve into the Indian film and discuss whether it is based on real events.

Qala is a psychological drama from director Anvita Dutt that follows the story of a singer called Qala Manjushree (Triptii Dimri), who finds that the rise to fame, and its eventual downward trend, can take a toll on the person involved.

Is Qala on Netflix, and when will the movie be released?

Yes, this dark and thought-provoking drama will be available to watch with a subscription to Netflix on Thursday, December 1st, 2022.

What is Qala about?

Here is the plot synopsis for the Netflix film Qala:

“Talented singer Qala Manjushree finds that her voice has earned her a chance to become a bit of a rising star, however, Qala has her own personal demons to contest with and seems tormented by her past. As success looms, pressures grow, not only from the industry but also from the arrival of a Svengali-like figure called Jagan who seems to add to her turmoil. Qala also has to deflect from her mother that does not share Qala’s ambition and appears to have nothing but disdain for her choices. As Qala seems set for stardom, the lines between what is real and what is fantasy become blurred. She is haunted by a voice in her head that warns her that there is something wrong with her and things look set to implode at the center of Qala’s world.”

From what we have seen so far, the cinematography and visuals look beautiful and stunning, and you can see the moments where there has been a blurring of the real and the fantasy world of Qala. It is also safe to assume that a Bollywood film about a rising star singer in the music industry will feature a number of songs and musical breaks. The period setting of the movie, the late thirties and early forties also adds an element of wonder to the project, and in the trailer, you can sample some of the extraordinary sets and costumes used to convey this era.

Is there an official trailer for the Netflix movie Qala?

Yes, there is, and it is simply sumptuous. Check it out here:

Is the Netflix movie Qala based on a true story?

No, the movie Qala is not based on a true story. The film does not feature real-life characters and situations, although the plot may be based on “playback singers” that were around in the late 1930s and 40s.

The theme of a complicated relationship between mother and daughter is very prominent in the screenplay, and this may reflect the concerns of these singers at the time. So, although this period drama may have elements of the truth in the story, it seems that the main players here are fictitious. Qala stars Tripti Dimri in the title role, Swastika Mukherjee, and Babil Khan, who is making his on-screen debut here. Babil is the son of late film actor Irrfan Khan and was eager to star in this production. Director Anvitaa Dutt, who had worked with Tripti before, praised her performance and knew exactly what the visual style of the film should embrace. Inspired by Art Neuveux and The Dutch Golden Age, the style of the production shines through.
