Is the White Noise movie based on a true story? We discuss the highly anticipated Netflix film. This article contains no spoilers.

White Noise is a new film by director Noah Baumbach, who also wrote the screenplay. This film should not be confused with the 2005 Michael Keaton spooky supernatural thriller of the same name. This film marks the first collaboration of Baumbach with Netflix, an agreement that was made back in January 2021. The exclusive agreement means that we can expect more work from this director in the future, and in the meantime, we are treated to the long-anticipated White Noise. The black comedy sci-fi drama follows the story of a family surviving in an apocalyptic landscape and having to deal with the everyday problems of an extended, often dysfunctional, and world-ending apocalypse.

What is the movie White Noise about?

The film follows Jack Gladley, a college professor played by Adam Driver, and his family, that live a pretty normal life in their typical mid-west American town. However, there is a catastrophic accident involving a truck and a train that leads to panic, and evacuation, and their whole world is turned upside down. The family must try and survive in the new world while still dealing with the problems of their old one. The film is a mix of comedy, sci-fi, drama, and even a bit of horror, and if it follows the source material, the film will also focus on themes of death, existence, relationships, and mortality.

When does White Noise come to Netflix?

The 2022 film White Noise will be available on Netflix from December 30th, 2022. The film will also receive a limited cinema release in some areas from November 25th, 2022.

Is the White Noise Movie based on a true story?

No, the movie is not based on a true story. White Noise is adapted from a book.

The book of the same title was written by Don DeLillo in 1985 and has been a well-loved best seller since its release.

This was the eighth book by Delillo, and it is considered to be the novel that would bring him to the attention of the mainstream literature world. He had originally wanted to call the book Panasonic, but the actual company, Panasonic, would not allow him to do this.

The book is almost episodic in its content, with part one of the novel focussing on the characters and their lives, before part two which is titled “The Airborne Toxic Effect”, which details the catastrophe that leads to a black chemical cloud threatening the town.

The third part of the novel “Dylarama” returns its focus to the main characters, and their angst, before the final part of the book brings the characters to a crowd that has gathered to watch a sunset. Chemical spills are of course a problem in real life, and in 1981, chemicals spilled from metal drums that were on a truck that had stopped on Interstate 40. It led to three hundred children being evacuated from an Elementary School in the region, but no injuries were recorded. Perhaps this kind of incident gave Delillo the basic idea for his novel in 1985?

It is also worth noting that this is director Noah Baumbach’s eleventh feature film, but this is his first movie that was not based on his own work.
