Doom Patrol might be one of the most out-there, fun shows currently on streaming. It stars Brendan Fraser, Matt Bomer, Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, Joivan Wade, and Michelle Gomez. as a ragtag group of metahumans fighting for a world that wants nothing to do with them.
How many seasons of Doom Patrol are there?
There are currently four seasons of Doom Patrol available to stream on HBO Max. The fourth season of the series will premiere on Thursday, December 8, with the release of the first two episodes. On January 5, it will go into a small hiatus before the release of the other six episodes later in 2023.
Is Doom Patrol in the DCEU?
This is definitely a tricky question, given the current turmoil the DC universe is in after the hiring of James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-heads of DC Studios. The two are set to create a new interconnected storyline of which we know nothing so far. However, Doom Patrol‘s connection to the rest of the DC projects was already an interesting question before because of the very nature of the DC continuity.
Over the past few years, DC has been exploiting the use of the multiverse, or parallel continuities, inside a larger framework. The Zack Snyder movies exist in a very much different continuity than the CW shows, which is also a different reality than the one where Joaquin Phoenix‘s Joker lives in. And this is also different from Robert Pattinson’s Batman. And again, this is different from Doom Patrol. So far, the television projects have only crossed paths once, during The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths cross-over event that took place in December 2020. It was then confirmed that the Doom Patrol come from The CW’s Earth-21.
What does the Showrunner say about Doom Patrol season 5?
Speaking to Screen Rant in a recent interview, showrunner and executive producer Jeremy Carver said the following about the show’s chances of getting the green light for the fifth season:
“Well, let me start backward and delicately with what you’re asking. But there can always be more of Doom Patrol, there can always be more, and we are prepared for more. I think at the same time, in this season, the characters are experiencing something that they’ve never experienced before. That’s not just impending death; it’s actually growing old. When one actually has the experience of growing old, it forces them to ask questions about themselves, their lives, and where they want things to end up before they might die in a way that can feel like an ending. But it is just another frontier in terms of the emotional arcs that we’re asking our Doomies to embark on.”
Will Doom Patrol have a season 5?
It’s obviously uncertain at the moment, especially given the big changes happening at Warner Bros. Discovery over the past six months. David Zaslav, current CEO of the company, which owns HBO and HBO Max, has not shielded away from canceling DC projects or shopping them elsewhere. A streaming series going into its fifth season usually means a lot of investment and not getting much in return.
It is unlikely to bring in new subscribers, and signing back actors and talent gets more and more expensive as a television series goes on, so it wouldn’t be surprising if this was Doom Patrol‘s last hurrah. Westworld‘s recent cancelation could be a precedent to consider here.
Gunn and Safran’s plan for the DC universe going forward is also to be considered here. While everything they are planning out now will likely not be in effect until late 2024 or 2025, they might start axing shows in preparation for the shift they will introduce. But that’s speaking quite prematurely, as it’s unknown whether or not they will build upon what they have at the moment (i.e., Henry Cavill’s Superman, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, etc.) Plans will be laid out within the next few months, and we’ll have a better idea of what we can expect.
If Doom Patrol is renewed for a fifth season, we’ll probably learn about it shortly after the season 4 premiere. For now, though, the odds are slim.
